Hey Y'All

By Tallulah Jones
From Wendy Lyn Watson's Mysteries a la Mode

This whole “blog” thing seems a little weird to me, but Finn insists everyone is doing it, Bree called me a chicken, my niece Alice helped me with the technical stuff . . . and so here I am, writing a diary on the Internet, out there for God and everyone to read.

I’m Tally Jones, and I own the Remember the A-la-mode in Dalliance, Texas, where I whip up luscious French pot ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, and sundaes. You’d think I’d get sick of ice cream, working with it day in and day out. But no. Pistachio, rocky road, raspberry mascarpone, peanut butter fudge, honey vanilla bean, pralines and cream . . . hand to God, I can always make room for a scoop of something cold and creamy.

Summer comes early to Texas, and we're expecting triple digits in a day or two, so business is picking up at the A-la-mode. (Just in the nick of time, too, because I’ve sorely neglected my house this past year, and I think my hot water heater is about to give up the ghost.) In summer, I prefer cleaner fruit flavors. Strawberry, peach, cherry, blackberry, lemon ... pure notes of fruit mellowed by fresh cream is the perfect antidote to the scorching Texas sun.

Right now, I’m really digging a tropical concoction of pineapple, coconut, and banana. I sure can’t afford a beach vacation, but one bite and I can almost hear the steel drums in the distance. Just don't ask me to limbo.

What about you folks? What’s your favorite summertime cooler? What should I be adding to the menu at Remember the A-la-mode?

  1. A nice pitcher of fresh-squeeze lemonade sounds good while relaxing on the chaise lounge reading a book. Lemonade sorbet does sound appetizing.

  2. I'll agree with everything Dru said, just need to change the lemonade to a Dunkin Donuts iced coffee.

  3. I really need to expand my ice cream palate. Though (brave girl that I am) I did recently try Key Lime ice cream.

    Yeah. Not so much.

Give me my mint chocolate chip any day. :)

  4. I agree with Elizabeth, you've got to have a tall glass of iced sweet tea in the summertime. Nothing cools you off better.

  5. I'm partial to vanilla ice cream with pink and green chunks of peppermint candy. Very refreshing in the summertime. Hard to find, though.

You're so lucky to own an ice cream parlor. Sounds heavenly to me.

  6. Oh, Sophie. Your taste is so plebian. Tallulah, if you want to attract those with upscale palates, then you simply must have dark chocolate ice cream with a kick of chili pepper. It's all the rage.

  7. Dru, Riley, and Mason - We definitely do sweet tea at our house (Bree insists on making simple syrup so the sugar doesn't "fall out"). And mixed with fresh lemonade ... oh, man, it's like swallowing sunshine.

Natasha and Sophie - Remember the A-la-mode does a great candy cane ice cream (though I always thought of it as a winter flavor -- might need to reconsider), and we have dark chocolate. We also make my signature Texas Twister - which has ribbons of caramel, bits of praline, and a kick of cayenne. Oh - and our pineapple-chili ice cream was a big hit when the Hatch peppers came in last fall.

  8. A tall glass of ice tea, with extra lemon always does it for me.
Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream is this southern girl's favorite treat.

  9. Okay, don't laugh or puke, but I'm always experimenting with my homegrown herbs. I'd love to see how a creamy lavender/rosemary ice cream would taste. I think it would be a lovely pale pinky-lavender color, don't you?

  10. Pineapple milkshake -- from anywhere. I love and enjoy far too many of them during the summer months. Yum.

  11. I'm just a plain old vanilla malt girl myself. Although I do like mint chocolate chip, and praline & cream, and .... Well, I think I need to go to the store for some now!

  12. Peach ice cream...ohhhh heaven in a bowl. I'm with you, Tally, I like the single fruit flavors in summertime, especially in Texas. This native loves me some Bluebell, but I bet yours trumps even that. I can't get Bluebell up here in Illinois, but your book sure made me daydream about some good ice cream!

  13. Ben & Jerry's has a mango lime sorbet that local stores never seem to carry any more. I love the crisp, clean flavor - especially during summer.

  14. It's a tie between mango gelato and a frozen margarita of any flavor. Hold the salt.

Can you fix me up a mango margarita gelato, Tallulah?

  15. Now what you ladies need is a Silver Stallion. It's a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a tall glass, a shot of gin, and fill with club soda. Believe me, you'll thank me.

    Your friendly bartender,
    Jeff

  16. Laineshots, the herbal ice creams don't get enough attention. I've had some excellent basil gelato, and I bet lavender rosemary would be wonderful (maybe I'll experiment on Bree).

Heather, I remember that one ... yum! You know B&J's has a flavor graveyard on their website. I go there to mourn often.

And Ellery, I think that mango margarita gelato sounds pretty awesome. Bree makes a mean margarita, and I think the flavors would translate well to ice cream ...

Oh, and Shel! I'm partial to my own stuff, but Bluebell is a close second! Up where you are in Indiana, you might look for Graeter's in your local Kroger. That's good stuff!

  17. Mr. Jeff, I'm going to introduce you to my cousin. I think you two could get into some serious trouble together ...

  18. Ohhh, yum!! My favorite? Chocolate mint chip ice cream. I must be stopped!

  19. I just made a blackberry cobbler with our own fresh blackberries. It was luscious but it could have used some of your vanilla ice cream to make it perfect, Tally. Oh, and I do love fresh peach ice cream in the good ole summertime, too!

  20. Chocolate pistachio almond ... always, any time of year, anywhere.

  21. An ice cream parlor--that's my idea of heaven. A place nearby sells 100 different flavors of ice cream. One of my friends visited and ordered--vanilla! How is that possible. He is quite a connosieur of ice cream and he said vanilla is the "gold standard." If the vanilla ice cream is good, then you know all the other flavors they serve will be top notch. Hmmm. I don't think I could resist ordering something like "mango surprise" or "rum raisin." But that's just me.

  22. Jamoca Almond Fudge. Remember that? It was chocolate covered almonds in coffee ice cream with swirled fudge. YUM!

And I bet lavender/rosemary would be delicious.

OH, and frozen snickers. Just one bite!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hank - I remember Jamoca Almond fudge very, very well. I think I may still have a little following me around. :)

And, Mary, your friend is exactly right. Just like a good chef should be able to make a perfect egg, a good creamery should have awesome vanilla.

  24. Maple pecan is always a winning flavor for me. Possibly even better is licorice ice cream...mmmm

  25. During the cold months, I drink alot of Chai tea. I bet Chai flavored ice cream would be great!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've tried chai flavored ice cream and a little bit goes a long way. Me, my favorite is McConnell's vanilla Bean. It comes from Santa Barbara, California, and is just the best.

  27. Oh yes...Graeter's....their Black Raspberry Chip is the best flavor I've ever had. Shoot, ANY of their chip flavors...they pour molten dark chocolate in while the IC is churning so instead of little bits you get CHUNKS of dark chocolate.

My hubby's fave is their Coconut Chip....like Mounds Ice Cream...also DEE-LISH!

  28. Did anyone mention Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream yet? One of my favorites!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jeff, your ice cream/drink sounds to die for! Pardon the pun. But I got to admit that Mint Chocolate Chip is my all time favorite as well, Heather. Now when it comes to summertime favorites, I gotta mention Strawberries with angel food cake. Our Strawberry Festival here in town charges way too much for it, but ya just gotta get it at least once. As my mother always says, "A day without ice cream is a waste!"

Pineapple coconut sorbet sounds like heaven to me. Like the tropics ^_^
