What Do You Think

You know the one about being able to find happiness in your own backyard? Well, it’s true of mystery, too. Maybe not quite my backyard, more like down the street. The one bright spot of my terrier mix Blondie’s day is her nightly walk. It’s also my chance to check out the neighborhood.

Here are the facts. There is a house down the street we pass every evening during our walk. A couple bought it awhile ago and totally remodeled the place. Shortly after they finished, I noticed them walking with a baby stroller. Shortly after that I noticed an older woman walking with them. She resembled the woman enough to make it a safe bet she was her mother.

Might I add, they are not at all friendly. I exchange a hello with most people I pass or at the very least a smile. With them, nada. And that’s after I rescued one of their dogs.

When ever I passed their house, there was always a sedan parked behind a fence and a green SUV parked in the driveway in front. Then a few weeks ago, no more SUV.

A few evenings ago, I was walking Blondie and saw the woman watering in the front yard. She’s tall and slender with pale brown hair, and rather plain looking. As I passed I went to smile. Just because they’re not friendly doesn’t mean I have to follow suit. The look I got back startled me. Her eyes looked hollow and her lips sagged in a sad expression.

The next night when I passed, the SUV was back in front of the house and I saw the man. Then I saw a woman come out with the stroller. This woman had dark hair, jazzy clothes, make up and a smile. Not Miss Sad Face. The SUV was there for three days. I saw the man and the dark haired woman walking with the stroller a couple of times. Now the SUV is gone again.

So, what do you think is going on?

  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wonders what my neighbors are up to! :)

This really puzzles me (I might need more coffee!) I was inclined to say that the baby stroller didn't have a baby in it because you mentioned the stroller, but not the infant. What else could they be transporting, though? And why would the jazzy lady, if she were having an affair with hubby, be staying at the house with the wife?

Good mystery..I'll check back in and see what others think. :)

  2. Oooh... I love this! Reminds me so much of me! I am always seeing conspiracies in my neighborhood. Most of mine are in my head, but this sounds like you've got a real mystery going on. I've had A STITCH IN CRIME on my TBR pile but haven't gotten to do *any* reading lately because of my deadline. Will I find out what happens when I read it? I can't wait!!!

  3. I think you and Blondie had better take more walks, and make certain you dawdle near that house. Is there an alley or street behind the property where you can snoop without being as noticeable?

  4. If it were me, I'd have my mom bake one of her famous cakes and bring it over as a welcome to then neighborhood gift. Surely a double fudge rum cake would get you an invitation to go inside. Once I was in the house, I'd check out the pictures.

  5. Elizabeth, good thinking about the stroller. Funny how I always focused on who was pushing it instead of what was in it.

Julie, afraid you won't find out about it in A Stitch in Crime. It's an adventure in progress.

Janet, no alley, but they also don't shut their drapes. Luckily, Blondie likes to take her time checking out every blade of grass in their front yard.

Skye, the cake sounds great, but I have a feeling if I got inside and found anything out, I might never leave.

  6. Hmmm. Any chance the couple is splitting up and they have a "nesting" agreement? Where the kid stays put and the parents take turns living in the house with the child?

That would be strange with such a small child though... how mysterious!

  7. Personally, I think he's moved out and came back for a few days and brought his girlfriend with him. Maybe he hopes they can all just get along.

  9. It's a mystery! I have no idea what's going on, but I'm certainly curious! "A Stitch in Crime" just moved higher up on my TBR list.

  10. I think Miss Jazzy Clothes, with the big smile is a live in therapist hired to fix this sad bunch of characters.

  11. Blondie and I did another walk by tonight. The SUV isn't back. And there was only one lonely light on in the back of the house.

  12. I so enjoy research, esp. when it's just down the street. Saves time and travel. Maybe Miss Jazzy is really Miss Mousy, the new look since Mr. Right came back. But, who is she now that he's gone again? And, will the baby ever get another outdoor walk? Stay tuned....
