TALL, DARK, HANDSOME, AND...ELIGIBLE?

From Janet Bolin -

The first of the Threadville Mysteries, Dire Threads, about Willow Vanderling's future adventures, is coming out next year. Meanwhile, here's what's happening to Willow and her best friend, Haylee, right now, this month:

Haylee,

How's it going in the boonies? NYC is HOT, but you knew that, and about the way the city smells, like garbage collection can never be enough.

Things have settled down at Quinlan Financial Management. Almost a month after the trial ended, no one talks about Jasper any more. It's like he's ceased to exist, which would drive him crazier. I'm soooo glad the judge didn't grant him bail. Jasper would be on some island somewhere, wherever he's stashed his cash. Of course, I'd be sure he was climbing up the stairs to my apartment at 3 AM...

Willow,

The boonies? Not. Elderberry Bay is a thriving metropolis with at least two commercial streets, a lake, a beach, a river, and a beautiful park linking it all. We even have a bandstand, all Victorian curlicues, painted white, and John Phillip Sousa's music on the Fourth of July. Kids flew kites on the beach, and the fireworks at night were fantastic.

EEEEK! When I named my new fabric boutique, it never occurred to me that someone might hear of The Stash and connect it to horrid Jasper Quinlan and his hidden stash! Now I'm going to worry. Haven't seen any FBI agents around. Do you think they'd dress in suits up here? No one else does, at least not the men.

I can't stop making suits for myself, though. Last night I started one--nice, cool linen. Very tailored (I can't help that) but still sort of casual.

Believe it or not, I have a date! A handsome guy named Mike who owns a vineyard! Meeting any nice single men in Manhattan?

Hey, Haylee,

Where are the nice single men in Manhattan? I think they're hiding from me.

Is Mike single? Are you sure?

Don't forget Jasper Quinlan. You thought he was nice and single, too.

Hey yourself, Willow,

Ha, ha, very funny. Even you believed that Jasper was single. Didn't you say something like, "Tall, dark, handsome, and eligible?"

Don't worry. I can look after myself.

Okay, Haylee, spill. How did the date with the vineyard owner go?

Note from Janet Bolin:

Given Haylee's past mistake(s) in men, what advice would you give her about this date?

  1. Did they both date Jasper? I must know!!!

  2. I would tell Haylee to take it easy and go with her guts, but at the same time have some fun.

  3. Oh, Julie, no. Only Haylee dated Jasper. And she stopped going out with him as soon as she realized he was married. By then, she was also very suspicious that he was misusing client funds at his investment firm, where she and Willow worked, and where Willow still works. Jasper's now in jail...

  4. Dru, I like how you think. And I will take your advice!

  5. Chances are very good that Mike is simply a nice guy but Haylee should keep her eyes open and get to know him before she jumps too deeply into the relationship. Still, a vineyard owner? He'd be a handy guy to have around. Never a dry glass in the house...! ;)

  6. Play the field before you (or your readers) fall for the guy. Once you (or they) are in love it is very tough to get rid of him.

  7. Wow. Since Haylee was burned by Jasper, you'd think she'd be very careful about any new men she meets! Is she sure Mike doesn't have a wife back at the vineyard, working the fields?

  8. Jen, yes, a vineyard sounds splendid, doesn't it? However, I do worry about Haylee.

Denise, I think she will play the field. She loves her new life up there in Elderberry Bay, with her fabric store. I don't think she'll want to change it any time soon.

Krista, yes, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Married men seem drawn to Haylee. Blondes understand them better?

  10. Krista, a married man once told Haylee that blondes understood him better than his wife did! Haylee didn't fall for that line. But I worry about her now that she's moved away from NYC, too far away for me to supervise ;)

  11. I'd tell her to get to Elderberry Bay in a hurry. Mike sounds like a catch! A vineyard? My kind of guy!

  12. Avery, Haylee is in Elderberry Bay, and so is this Mike guy. That's what worries me, since I live in NYC, where Haylee used to live.

However...can't you imagine sipping delicious wine on a patio overlooking vineyards? With, of course, cheese. And delicious bread.

I can hardly wait to hear about Haylee's date! Maybe this could work out very nicely.

  13. Yikes, I had a comment all written and then my computer threw a fit and wouldn't let it post. I'll try again. I think if Haylee had lived in NYC she's have some sense about men. Maybe this Mike guy doesn't have a wife out working in the fields or buried there. Maybe he's just one of those dull guys with a nasally voice who spends all his time talking about the weather and what it is going to do to his grape crop before he launches in his merlot versus pinot noir rant.

  14. Wife out working in the fields...or buried there? Betty, you have me really worried about Haylee, now!

Haylee, however, wouldn't go out with someone with a nasally voice, and I hope you're wrong about his conversational skills. I'm prepared to fly up there sometime and taste-test both the merlot and the pinot noir.

  15. Hi Willow,

Best friends have a sense about each other, so if Willow suggests Haylee take things easy, I'd take her wise advice. Never hurts to be careful and to guard your heart. Trust me on this one.

By the way, I really love your name!

  16. I have to admit that I haven't met the guy. But I agree with you that she should take things easy.

I like your name, too. But our parents did saddle us with expectations when they gave us these names, didn't they? I have to stay slim and you can never be clumsy.

How can I stay slim if my best friend lives in a vineyard? Oops. Even Haylee would say I was rushing things.

Note from Haylee: Yes, I would!

  17. Yes, Janet, someone said vineyard. I'm pretty sure Mike doesn't have a winery, though. That might be better. I look forward to seeing this vineyard.
