Halloween Fun

113082127848 I don’t know about y’all, but we’re getting all set for Halloween here at Aunt Pat’s Barbeque restaurant. It might be weeks away, but as soon as October 1 hits, I’m pulling out the pumpkins, skeletons, and witches.

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. The air has finally got a crispness to it in Memphis (although this summer threatened to drag on until winter!) The leaves have turned color and are falling.

And we decorate the restaurant with all kinds of Halloween stuff—some of it from when my kids were little, long ago.

Last week we had a pumpkin carving contest and thirty people showed up! It tickles me pink to see how creative people can be and how much fun they can have doing something so simple.

My favorite part is Halloween night itself when we have Blues and Boos. We’ll have a blues band to play on the restaurant’s front porch with their music spilling out onto Beale to pull in folks off the street. Anyone in a costume (and we’re pretty lenient on the definition of ‘costume’—if it looks like you’ve tried at all, then you’re okay) gets a discount coupon for a barbeque plate.

We have candy at Aunt Pat’s for the little ones, so they can come trick or treat with us. My goal is to get all the candy out of the restaurant by the end of the night! Otherwise I end up just a few pounds heavier in November—and that’s followed by the one-two punch of Thanksgiving and Christmas! So if you trick or treat at Aunt Pat’s, you’re going to end up with plenty of candy in your bag.

So I’ve shared some of my favorite things about Halloween. How about y’all? Is it the weather? The parties? The candy? Or are there other holidays you like better?

  1. For me it's the weather and the smells. Hopefully by Halloween there'll be a nip in the air making it perfect for a cup of hot cider or a slice of sweet potato pie. Plus it's fun craving the pumpkins. Sounds like Aunt Pat's is the place to be on Halloween Night.

  2. I'm with Mason, it's the weather, the beautiful foliage, etc. But hey, it's also an excuse to eat candy, which works for me. I would love to be at Aunt Pat's. I wonder what she thinks of folks who dress up their pets in Halloween costumes? Not that I do it, my cats would be completely opposed to the idea, just sayin'...

  3. My favorite thing about Halloween is that it holds off the Christmas merchandise for another month.

  4. Mason--I forgot to mention the hot cider! We love it over at Aunt Pat's. :)

Mary--Mmm! And I love those Reece's Pieces. My very favorites! I think *some* pets enjoy being dressed up and some would *not* be happy about it. :) But aren't they cute?

Denise--Exactly! But, boy, the stores have the stuff waiting in the storeroom and ready to go!

I love taking Lady K Trick or Treating and the decisions of what she's going to be each year. She has such a good time and it makes it that much more fun to get the decorations out and finding more.

  6. Vickie--Decorating is fun, isn't it? For some reason, it seems like less of a chore than getting all the Christmas things pulled out! :)

  8. I really like the horror movies that come on..that and the Halloween themed shows. It's a fun time of year that always adds a little bit of magic to the beginning of Winter.
