I don’t know about y’all, but we’re getting all set for Halloween here at Aunt Pat’s Barbeque restaurant. It might be weeks away, but as soon as October 1 hits, I’m pulling out the pumpkins, skeletons, and witches.
Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. The air has finally got a crispness to it in Memphis (although this summer threatened to drag on until winter!) The leaves have turned color and are falling.
And we decorate the restaurant with all kinds of Halloween stuff—some of it from when my kids were little, long ago.
Last week we had a pumpkin carving contest and thirty people showed up! It tickles me pink to see how creative people can be and how much fun they can have doing something so simple.
My favorite part is Halloween night itself when we have Blues and Boos. We’ll have a blues band to play on the restaurant’s front porch with their music spilling out onto Beale to pull in folks off the street. Anyone in a costume (and we’re pretty lenient on the definition of ‘costume’—if it looks like you’ve tried at all, then you’re okay) gets a discount coupon for a barbeque plate.
We have candy at Aunt Pat’s for the little ones, so they can come trick or treat with us. My goal is to get all the candy out of the restaurant by the end of the night! Otherwise I end up just a few pounds heavier in November—and that’s followed by the one-two punch of Thanksgiving and Christmas! So if you trick or treat at Aunt Pat’s, you’re going to end up with plenty of candy in your bag.
So I’ve shared some of my favorite things about Halloween. How about y’all? Is it the weather? The parties? The candy? Or are there other holidays you like better?
