Pet Rescue Rules!

Submitted by Lauren Vancouver, pet rescuer, whose adventures will be memorialized in the Pet Rescue Mysteries by Linda O. Johnston

Hello. I’m Lauren Vancouver. If you have heard of me, that’s because I was introduced in HOWL DEADLY and FELINE FATALE, the most recent Kendra Ballanyne, Pet-Sitter mysteries from Berkley Prime Crime.

What I do is so critical that I will have my own mystery series, starting in March 2011 with BEAGLEMANIA.

I save pets. That’s the most important thing to me--except for my two college-age kids, of course. But they understand how their mother is driven to take care of homeless or abused animals and find them new forever homes.

I was chosen to run a wonderful no-kill private pet shelter in the San Fernando Valley. HotRescues is fortunate enough to have been founded by Dante DeFrancisco, the wealthy magnate who runs the large pet store chain HotPets, so unlike most shelters we don’t lack for funds.

Strangely, though, I’ve recently been running into difficult situations. Well... that’s not strong enough. There have been murders around me. I’m the kind of person who likes to take charge of things, so I’ve found myself having to solve them. Especially in BEAGLEMANIA--since, of all things, the police consider me their primary suspect.

The person who was murdered... well, he was an animal abuser. He was involved with the puppy mill that is raided at the beginning of BEAGLEMANIA. I’m sorry, of course, that he is dead, but at least he won’t be hurting animals any more.

I’ve heard rumors that, in my stories, “no-kill” refers to pets, not people. Maybe so.

You can find out for yourself starting with BEAGLEMANIA, which premiers in March, 2011. It will be followed by THE MORE THE TERRIER, which begins with a real dilemma for me: I discover that my old mentor in pet rescue has become an animal hoarder. And I’m told that there are more murders to come...

  1. i can't wait for this one. i am a big supporter of cocker spainel rescue so this is a subject near to my heart

  2. Oh gosh! Look at that cover. I'd buy the book for that alone. Can't wait to read this new series.

  3. I'm really looking forward to this series, too. And I love the cover.

  4. Those beagles are adorable! I'm big on animal rescue, too. This series sounds grrrreat!

  5. Lauren - so great to meet you and I'm very much looking forward to reading your series. i'm British and it's often said that British people are much fonder of their pets than their spouses and children - need I say more?

  6. I can't wait also - I'm a supporter of Japanese Chin rescue (2 of my 3 came through rescue), so I know this book will be right up my alley---dogs and murdery mystery!

  7. Actually, despite the picture, it's Lauren who says--

mom2dogz, Krista and Kuzlin, I applaud and thank you for your pet rescues!

Heather and Janet, I'm quite happy with the cover, too. It depicts fairly well an event at the beginning of BEAGLEMANIA.

Hannah, I'm glad to meet you, too. Love your Vicky Hill mysteries. And the Brits have it right regarding pets!

I believe that Linda agrees with all of the above.

  8. I love the cover and can't wait to read this book.

  9. Lauren again--
Thank you, Dru. I think Linda did a good job of relating what happened. I have to admit that reading about it was enjoyable to me, too.

  10. I'm so excited to hear about this series. Pet rescue is wonderful and needs to be promoted and discussed-what a wonderful way to bring up the topic!

  11. And Lauren again--
That's a major reason I agreed to have my stories told, Katreader--to call even more attention to needy animals and to helping them.

  12. Love the cover! Can't wait to read it!

  13. I am looking forward to your adventures. We are having terrible luck right now trying to adopt a pet. Due to allergies we need either a special breed cat or dog with hair not fur. Unfortunately the shelters we are finding charge more for these pets, in some cases as much as buying a baby dog or cat from a breeder. We will find our new family member at some point, until then, maybe we will live vicariously through you...

  14. This time, Linda's taking over!

Thanks, April. I hope you, and everyone, enjoy BEAGLEMANIA.

Cynthia, I really hope you find the right pet for your situation soon. My older son has allergy issues and now has an adorable Puli, but I'm sure it's hard to find a suitable and affordable rescue. Best of luck!

  15. Just put this on my 'to buy' list. Love the idea of pet rescue theme. We just adopted a little terrier mix rescue at the beginning of December & she's a wonderful companion to our little chihuahua!

  16. I raise foster kittens for the local humane society so animal rescue is a subject close to my heart. I've read all the pet sitter mysteries and can't wait for the new series.

  17. Linda again--
Thanks, Kay. And congratulations on your new family member!

That's great, pennyt. So wonderful for the kittens you foster! Glad you read about Kendra. She appears now and then in Lauren's stories.

  18. I love the cover and can't wait to read the book!
