A Dog's Life

Submitted by Blondie Pink (from Betty Hechtman’s Crochet Mystery Series)

First let me tell you that isn't me on the cover. That's Spike. He belongs to Mason Fields and is pretty set on being an only dog. I went out to dinner with him once and let me tell you it wasn't pleasant. It was just bark, bark, bark. He even barked at me.

My name is Blondie Pink. I’m not so sure about the last name. I mean, I’m a dog. But if that is what my person wants to call me, it’s okay by me. See, it’s thanks to Molly Pink that my life changed.

Things weren’t so swell for me before. First, I got separated from my mom and the other puppies. Some street guy took care of me for awhile and then one day he just wasn’t there anymore. I waited and waited, but he never came back. There I was all alone. I was really really hungry when the lady picked me up in her car. I was hoping she was going to take me home with her, but instead she took me to this place with a lot of other dogs. We each had our own little fenced-in place, but it was in the mountains and at night the coyotes would howl and come around looking for dinner. I didn’t want it to be me.

You could say I spent my formative year and a half at that shelter. Once a day they’d take me out and let me run around with another dog and then it was back to my own little place. After awhile I forgot what it was like to have a person.

One day a woman and her son came to the shelter and looked at me. The boy seemed to like me and they took me home with them. It was very nice being inside with no coyotes hanging around my dog run or rats trying to get my food. I don’t know what I did wrong, but I guess the people decided they didn’t like me because they took me back to the shelter.

A while later Molly came to the shelter. I don’t exactly understand, but I think we were both in the same situation. We both felt sort of abandoned. I kept my paws crossed when she took me home with her. I tried - I really did - to be good so she’d let me stay. See, the thing is, I don’t really know what you’re supposed to do, to be somebody’s pet.

But Molly was okay with me spending all my time sitting in a chair. She didn’t seem to mind that I kept to myself and that I was afraid to go out the dog door. Best of all, she started taking me for a walk every night. And very best of all, she let me stay. It really makes me feel good when she tells me that I’m a good dog and that she loves me.

Now Cosmo lives with us. I’m not sure what his last name is supposed to be. He’s supposed to be that homicide detective’s dog, so I guess his last name should be Greenberg. And there are two cats with us - Holstein and Cat Woman. I love them and particularly their food, which is fair because they like my food. I guess their last name should be Pink, too.

Just in case you wonder what I look like. I’m a terrier mix. Some people think I look like that movie star dog Benji, only my fur is a strawberry blond.

  1. I'm glad that you and Molly found each other.

  2. Blondie, we understand. Our story is similar, but we are a brother and sister. We managed to stay together when we all got dumped in the streets, and now we live with Willow, who makes pictures with thread, and she says we're keepers. We agree!

What's with these dogs who bark even when there's nothing important to say? Our motto is: don't bark at it. Herd it.

  3. Aw, Blondie... I got a little teary-eyed at your story, but I'm glad you found your 'forever' home, as those who look after all the lonesome dogs in the world call it.

  4. What a great story! Love the animals living with you. Makes everything a bit cozier, I think.

  5. Hey Blondie, we are also rescued and ended up with the right person (Charlotte Adams). Her friend Jack rescued us and made sure Charlotte took us in. We are her first pets. We loved your story and all the extra dogs and cats! We think there are too many humans in books. Keep up the good work. Oops, gotta run. Here comes you know who.

    Truffle and Sweet Marie (Adams)

  6. So glad you found the right person, Blondie -- and she found you, too. I'm sure you add alot to each other's lives!

  7. Blondie, you sound so sweet. I'm sorry you had such a rough first year, but I'm glad you and Molly found each other. :)

  8. You are a very good dog. I'm glad you finally found a forever home. :)

  9. Forever home, I like that. Thank you humans and cats and dogs for your good wishes.
