An interview with a police detective

Joining us today is Stan Cooper, senior
detective for the Scottsdale Police
Department (and one of the characters
from Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery
mystery series) .

Stan is not a writer, so he agreed to answer
a few questions from me (Jenn here) to
help me gain some insight on the goings
on at the cupcake bakery.

JM: Hi, Stan. Thanks for joining us today.

SC: I had a choice?

JM: No, but thanks anyway.

SC: Heavy sigh

JM: Here, Stan, have a Tums, you'll feel

(Stan takes the offered anti acid pill and grinds it between his molars).

JM: So, what do you think about Mel and Joe?

SC: I think he'd better treat her right or else the entire SPD is going to come down
on him like a hammer. That being said, I like him. He's a good guy.

JM: What about Angie's new boyfriend Roach?

SC: Don't like him.

JM: Why not?

SC: He's a murder suspect. What are the brothers thinking, letting her date him?

JM: But he makes her happy.

SC: Happiness is overrated.

JM: Okay then. What about you, Stan? Are you ever going to date?

SC: What is this? Oprah? Why are we talking about girl stuff? I'm a homicide
detective. I thought you wanted to pick my brain about forensic evidence or
review some cases not talk about my social life. Sheesh!

JM: I'm sorry, Stan. I'm just trying to get your input on my character development.

SC: Well, you should just pay more attention. You're the author. Surely, you must
know that I've been in love with Mel's mother for years.

JM: What?!

SC: Oh, crap. You're not going to do anything with that, are you? Look. You didn't
hear me say that. Hey, is that my radio? Gotta go!

JM: Stan, wait!

He leaves. Jenn sits, scratching her head.

JM: Well, I didn't see that coming. Stan is in love with Joyce. What am
I supposed to do with that?

Well, readers and writers, what do you do when someone you know or
one of your characters falls in love with someone you didn't think was
meant for them? Encourage them? Or distract them with something

Oh, and btw, today is my birthday!!! Happy Birthday to me!

  1. Happy Birthday to you! I'm looking forward to reading this series. Just read Stuck on Murder. Very good read!

  2. LOL loved the post! Happy b-day.

    Can't wait to read this.

  3. Happy birthday! And, by all means, encourage the relationship. :)

  4. Jenn, my characters are a bit headstrong, too, especially in matters of the heart. I'm not sure that distracting them works, but it's worth a try.

    Happy Birthday!

  5. Encourage the relationship. It will be a hoot to see Mel's reaction.

    Happy Birthday Jenn!

  6. Happy Birthday, Jenn! : )

I'm very eager to read the responses, because one of my characters is secretly in love with another one. Not sure when, or if, the character will ever reveal it!

  7. Hope it's a Happy Birthday, Jenn...maybe you can stretch it into a week!

Sometimes it's hard to control characters but perhaps you can try manoeuvering instead. Just a thought that probably won't work. Good luck though.

  8. Happy Birthday, Jenn!

I vote for encouraging the relationship, too. I love happily-ever-afters.

  9. Hope you have a great Birthday!

I also vote for seeing where that relationship goes - it might be very interesting.

  10. Love always finds a way ... no sense trying to fight it. And happy birthday!

  11. Happy happy birthday. And won't it be fun to find out where THIS love story goes??:^)

  12. Thanks for the birthday wishes, all. I was going to get cupcakes, but then a bff gave me a cupcake shaped cake pan. We're breaking it in! Sweet. Cake part done. Waiting for the cool down to frost. YUM!
As for Stan, he deserves some love but that Joyce is a handful...I just don't know. We'll see...;-)

  13. I didn't like seeing Angie and Roach together. Interested to see where that goes.

    BirthdayGirlHappy... or something like that.

  14. Love is always good, and a secret love... well, secrets do have a way of coming out, don't they???
