When your life implodes, it is hard to imagine that things will get better. And sometimes, just when you think things are looking up something even worse happens.
Probably, I should explain. here's the short version: I was downsized from my job and discovered my fiance cheating on me. Major life altering events! So, I packed up my things (mostly books) and took a job as library director in the small coastal town of Briar Creek, Connecticut. I love this library. See the picture? Isn't it gorgeous? I love this town. And I love that I get to work with my best friend Beth Stanley, who is the children's librarian at the Briar Creek Public Library.
That's Beth in the giant tea pot. She really enjoys getting the kids excited about reading and does the best story times in the state, if not the country.
Anyway, I was just beginning to feel at home in Briar Creek. I had unpacked all of my boxes and was learning the intricacies of dealing with "the lemon" (that's what Beth calls Ms. Cole, our old school librarian who is a bit tart) when a children's book editor arrived from New York City.
This was amazing news because it was the perfect chance for Beth to sell the children’s book she’d written. Unfortunately, Beth’s boyfriend, Rick, a famous author and local celebrity, tried to stop her. When Beth and I met with the editor, we uncovered the real reason for Rick’s bad attitude.
Naturally, we decided to go confront Rick at his house on the mysterious Thumb Islands, an archipelago of seventy islands off the coast of Briar Creek, only to find him murdered. Now, the local chief of police likes Beth for the murder and isn’t interested in looking elsewhere. I have to act fast before they throw the book at the wrong person. After all, Beth is one of my oldest friends and my best employee. I have to help her. Isn't that what you would do?
