You Can Fool Some Of The People

By Arabella Andrews – Sweet Nothings Vintage Lingerie Series – Coming September 2012 -- by Meg London

Welcome, y’all. Please make yourself comfortable. I’ve got a nice cold pitcher of sweet tea waiting for you and a plate of homemade cheese straws.

My name is Arabella Andrews, and I’m the owner of Sweet Nothings, a lingerie store in Paris, Tennessee. I go to estate sales, buy up beautiful vintage pieces like that pink Lucie Ann negligee I found last week, and sell them in my shop. You do have to have your wits about you, though. People see my gray hair and think they can put one over on me. Well, I’ve been around. I was born in Tennessee, but I’ve traveled all over from Europe to India to Asia. Oh, the stories I could tell! But you probably don’t have time for that.

Anyway, as I was saying, I went to this sale in Jackson the other day. They tried to tell me this gown was vintage—1935. I knew as soon as I turned it inside out that it wasn’t close to being vintage!

Do you want to know how? The care label! There was a care label sewn into the seam plain as day. Care labels weren’t put on clothes until after 1970. Of course some people would consider 1970 vintage, but at my age, well frankly, it seems like yesterday!

Of course the things that have been happening in sleepy old Paris these days would make your head spin! I honestly don’t know what to make of it! Of course I don’t believe in gossip, mind, but if it’s true, then it’s not really gossip, is it?

  2. You sound like my kind of gal, Arabella. Can't wait to get my hands on your book...and maybe keep my eyes open for some vintage lingerie, too.

  3. A little gossip never hurt anyone. Well, not many, at least... But you're right--if it's true, it's not gossip.

    Looking forward to the book!

  8. Ooo, Sweet Nothings sounds like my kind of shop! I think I'll pop over--it's just a few states--and sit a spell. I like me some good gossip.
