For a good cause...

By Alyssa Dunn, Staff member in Senator Finnegan's Office
From Dorothy St. James's Flowerbed of State

Casey doesn't know what she's missing. All she seems to think about are her precious plants. She even talks to them. It's unnerving.

You're not going to find me messing around with plants like that. Sure, they're pretty to look at, but not nearly as exciting as a designer bag, especially if I can get it for a great price.

You'd think Casey and I would be incompatible as roommates. I worried that we'd have nothing to talk about when we first moved in together. Let me tell you, I was wrong. Casey needs me. She needs my guidance when it comes to men. She might be a genius with plants, but she's clueless when it comes to tall, dark and rich.

I've made Casey my project. I'm going to straighten her out. I'm going to make her more daring. She's going to live with abandon. And I swear I'm going to do something about the drab clothes she insists on wearing. A girl has to glam it up. No, not for the man in her life, but for herself.

How many times have I told Casey that? How many times has she listened?

If stubborn were a mule, her name would be Casey. (I heard her mutter something like that the other day, only the mule's name was Alyssa. Casey always has the funniest sayings. She's colorful. I like that about her.)

There's one place where Casey and I have teamed up on the shopping front. That's at Brenda Novak's Online Auction for the Cure of Diabetes. This May marks the auction's 7th year. Novelists and others from around the globe have donated the best swag. There are designer handbags and designer gowns and fabulous trips. There's also specialty items offered at a full range of prices. And it's for a great cause: to find a cure for Diabetes.

I'm bidding on the colossal mystery collection. If I win it, I'm going to give the collection of mysteries to Casey for her birthday. I hope she's not bidding against me.

The auction runs through the month of May. If you're looking for a little glamor or excitement in your life, go bid!

  1. I'm not sure that designer bags and gowns are the proper attire for gardening, but Casey may surprise you one of these days - or evenings.

  2. Thank you, Janet. I have no need for fancy clothes. I prefer practical and comfortable. Sometimes I think Alyssa and I speak two different languages. All the same, she's the best roommate I've ever had.

  3. Alyssa, don't try to change Casey, just love her for who she is!

Good luck with the auction; what a great gift idea!

  4. Hi, Alyssa, so nice to meet you. I have my copy of FLOWERBED but I've been short on reading time. The more I hear about Casey's adventures, and now yours, make me want to forget all my to-dos and sit down to read! Can't wait to learn more about both of you.

  5. Reading Julie Hyzy's WH Chef series led me to yours. Sounds good and plan to check out.

  6. Sounds like you can be stubborn, too Alyssa. We'll see who budges first! It's at the top of my TBR pile.
    Great auction idea!

  7. Hi Alyssa and Casey,

I just read your story and you both need each other. You do give good fashion advice and I'm sure when the time comes Casey will give you good advice on sleuthing.

  8. Sounds like an interesting new series.
