Ina Weighs In

By Ina Carroll from Amanda Flower’s Maid of Murder

Finally, I get to speak my piece. India is my tenant, and I love her like the great niece I never had. However, she downplayed my role in her first investigation, the Olivia Blocken case. Instead, she portrayed me as a nut. Do I look like a nut to you? Be careful how you answer that. Remember, I am a mature woman and could drop dead at any moment.

When she does mention me she spends far too much time talking about my leprechauns. I know they are an enchanting lot, but there is much more to me than three dozen garden leprechauns and an emerald green pantsuit. I’m a crime fighter. If it had not been for me India would have never solved her first case. But I’m a forgive and forget type. I don’t hold a grudge… most of the time. For the record, Detective Mains doesn’t count.

However, in this next book by Amanda Flower, Murder in a Basket, India elevates me to my proper place as Watson to her Sherlock. In all honesty, I should be Sherlock, but this Flower person always takes India’s point of view. She and India are in cahoots, but I digress. In this new book, I get to show off my crime fighting skills. I chase truant jaywalkers, investigate crime scenes, interview the suspects, and get a nifty set of lock picks.

I can hardly wait for you to read all about it! Bad news is you have to wait until February! Awful, right? Worse yet, the story takes place around Halloween, but it hits the bookstore and library shelves closer to Valentine’s Day. Nobody ever consults me on these matters. Harumph!

Amanda Flower writes the India Hayes Mystery Series. The first novel in the series, MAID OF MURDER, was nominated for an Agatha Award. The sequel, MURDER IN A BASKET, releases February 2012. 5. I think you should plan a mutiny before book 3. Show them who's really boss. You might need some bigger tools than lock picks to pull it off, though. Just something to think about.

  6. Ina, if you have been elevated to Watson in book two, then surely it's just a matter of time until that Flower person recognizes that you're the real sleuth!

I like the way you think! I really deserve my own series. I will talk it over with the Flower girl...

  9. LOL! She sounds like a hoot. Would love to have someone around that thinks just like her. Maybe in the future she'll get her own book.
