By Mabel Hatfield from the Sweet Nothings Vintage Lingerie Series
By Meg London -- “Murder Unmentionable” Coming from Berkley Prime Crime September 2012
Hi, if you come a little closer, you can read the name tag on my uni—right here. It says “Mabel Hatfield.” No, definitely not those Hatfields. Never met ‘em and don’t want to.
I live in Paris, Tennessee, and you wouldn’t think much goes on here, but it does. And I see it all. I’m a waitress at the Coffee Klatch, and you wouldn’t believe what people say thinking I can’t hear a word of it.
And there’s plenty of gossip even in a small town like Paris. We may not have the Kardashians or Lindsay Lohan here like they do in Hollywood, but we’ve got Deirdre Porter who everyone thinks is having an affair with someone although none of them can quite agree about who the lucky fellow is. Then there’s Miss Arabella juggling two men at once and one time they near came to blows right in the middle of Washington Street and here all the parties concerned ought to know better seeing as how they’re old enough to collect social security.
Then there’s Miss Arabella’s friend who got her knickers all in a twist over one of them fellows thinking she had some kind of first dibs.
Then, of course, there was the murder that happened last month. That sent everyone into a tizzy. All running around with their head cut off trying to figure out who done it. Lots of stones were overturned and what was underneath wasn’t pretty. But then it never is. It doesn’t matter if you live in a small town or a big one.
Sometimes I think small towns are even worse when it comes to gossip. What do you think?
