Granny Gert’s Special-K-Bars

Fortune Teller Mysteries

Hello, yoo-hoo, anyone in here? This is Granny Gert from Kari Lee Townsend’s Fortune Teller Series. I am first introduced in book two, CORPSE IN THE CRYSTAL BALL, which comes out in June of 2012. I am just thrilled she decided to write me in. Why, I just love Divinity. It’s such a quaint, small town. A big difference from New York City. You see, my basement flooded, so my daughter Vivian Meadows, is taking care of having it fixed for me. The repairmen seemed to be backed way up, or so she tells me, and she suggested I go visit my granddaughter, Sunny. Sunny seems to think her dear old mom is up to some tomfoolery, and this is her way of keeping her eye on her only daughter. I do have to say I wouldn’t put it past her. I am much more like Sunny than Vivian is which she has always resented. I can’t help it our glasses are always half full, unlike, ahem, hers. But don’t tell her I said so. She can be so darn cranky sometimes.

Anywho, I just love Sunny’s darling pet, Morty. He’s so mysterious and such a beautiful cat. Sunny was amazed when he took a shine to me as well. I guess he doesn’t warm up to most people, especially that handsome young fellow, Detective Mitch Stone. Although, I can see why. He can be a bit grumpy at times, but I can see right through him to the big softy he is on the inside. Anyway, Morty even allowed me to make him some adorable bowtie’s out of Sunny’s old curtains. Can you believe that perfectly good material was just stuffed in a closet wasting away? Back in my day, we didn’t waste anything. I still use all the aprons I made out of old flour sacks, and my cookie jar is just dandy, even though the lid broke years ago. I wrapped a plate in foil, and it works just as well as the original cover. Maybe even better. My husband always said no one’s cookies taste better than mine, especially when I keep them in that old pumpkin cookie jar. Sunny jokes that I have a cookie for everything, and I have to admit, she’s probably right. But since my husband passed away a while back, I don’t have anyone to share them with. At least I didn’t, but now that’s all changed since I have Sunny and Morty.

She doesn’t know it yet, but I think I might stick around for a while.

Speaking of cookies, with the holidays here, I thought you all might like to have the recipe for one of my favorites … Special-K-Bars! They are quick, easy, and oh-so-delicious. I’ll share the recipe below, and you be sure to let me know what you think. Be jolly, be merry, be safe…and have a wonderful and happy new year filled with amazing things to come in 2012.

Special-K-Bars

Mix 1 cup Karo Syrup with 1 cup sugar in a large sauce pan

Bring just to a boil and then remove from burner

Stir in 1 ½ cups of creamy peanut butter until melted

Stir in 6 cups Special K Cereal

Press mixture into buttered 9x13 pan

Melt 12 oz bag of Hershey’s semi-sweet chocolate chips (double boiler style)

Pour over mixture

Put in refrigerator, let harden, cut and enjoy!

Toodles! See you all in June

  7. Thanks guys! I love Granny Gert, she is an absolute hoot. She is a combination of my real Granmother Gertrude and my mother :-) I can't wait until June. In the meantime, I have to finish Trouble in the Tarot by March 1st....eeek!

  8. Oh, YUM! Both for introducing me to a new series for me and for the recipe of something sweet and simple (the best 's' words out there...except maybe 'sparkly')
