Food Glorious Food

by Hayley Snow from Lucy Burdette's AN APPETITE FOR MURDER

I'm so excited that my story has finally been published and to celebrate, I decided to share some of my favorite places in Key West, Florida! Of course, tourists come here for lots of reasons--the weather, the parties, the arts scene, the scenery...but for me, it's all about the FOOD!

Maybe you all aren't as crazy about bread as I am, but then maybe you've never had the bread from Cole's Peace on Eaton Street. They've got big square loaves of mango--studded with chunks of orange mango--and whole grain and sourdough and rye--you'll never think about bread the same way. And while you're waiting for them to make you a sandwich, duck in next door to The Restaurant Store--everything you'll need for your kitchen and more.

Later on (or the next day), you'll want to try a burrito from Bad Boy Burritos on Simonton Street. It's a tiny little storefront, but everything is so fresh. I usually choose the chicken with black beans and rice and green salsa and extra cilantro and shredded cabbage. And if they ask if you want extra jalapenos on that, the answer is yes!

Naturally fish is a big thing here as the town is surrounded by water. A funky, outdoor spot I love is B.O.'s Fishwagon. Don't worry about the rustic surroundings, just step up and order fried or grilled grouper with a salad on the side.

And if you have room after all that, you'll want dessert. Key lime pie is all the rage here, naturally. But if I were you, this being the site of a murder mystery and all, I'd be careful where it comes from. In fact, my preference is to make it myself! (Oops, sorry my photo came out crooked:)

And if you can't make a trip to Key West right away, I hope you enjoy AN APPETITE FOR MURDER! Read more about Lucy Burdette and the Key West food critic mysteries at her website or follow her on facebook or twitter.

  2. Helpful hint: if you go camping in Florida, don't leave your key lime pie outside.

  3. I've gotten as far south as Naples but Key West is definitely on my list of places to go. Especially with these mouth-watering lures. Appetite for Murder is on its way through the mail. Eager to read it.
