All the Single Ladies!

by Tally Jones
from Wendy Lyn Watson's Mysteries a la Mode

My niece Alice spent a solid month dancing around the Remember the A-la-mode to some bouncy pop song calling out to all the single ladies.  Even Alice admitted it was a silly song, and she busted up laughing every time she sang it, but it was a catchy ditty.  Pretty soon, Bree and I were humming along with her, and even Kyle Mason--trying hard to be the macho man around my darling niece--would bob his head in time to the tune.

Again, a silly song if ever there was one, but there's a line:  "If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it."

Well, girls and boys, that's starting to sound like some mighty good advice.  I've been dating my beau, Finn Harper, steady now for almost a year, and I'm starting to wonder if he'll ever "put a ring on it."  "It" being my finger, in case you didn't know.

I guess I understand his reluctance.  After all, the first time we dated, he was ready to run off with me into the sunset, and I dumped him right there in the Tasty Swirl parking lot.  And the second time we dated, well, he was right on the verge of popping the question when--you guessed it--I dumped him again.  (To be fair, I had a really, really good reason that second time.)

Third time's the charm, right?

Ha!  Like I said, I can completely understand why he might be skittish about proposing.  Once bitten, twice shy ... and three times terrified.

But I confess, I really want us to get hitched.  We've worked through some of the worst troubles a couple could possibly have, and we've come out stronger on the other side.  And while I love my niece, I wouldn't mind having a little one of my own; for reasons too complicated to explain here, I won't do that outside the bounds of holy matrimony.  So I need Finn to fish or cut bait.

Preferably fish.

Unless ...

Unless this time, I pop the question.  I'm a traditional girl, but hand to God I'm tempted to ask Finn Harper to be my groom.

What do you think?  Should I be the modern woman and ask Finn to marry me?  Or should I wait until he gets over his case of nerves and asks me?  What would you do?

  1. take the bull by the horns girl....ask him already. we have not seen that yet in a cozy....would set a strong independent woman precedent

  2. Tally, honey, I think after dumping him twice on the verge of a proposal you're going to have to ask him. He's as skittish as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs at this point.

  3. Tally, I don't think you should *ask* him to marry you. Tell him he is!

  4. Ask him or rather I like Edna's response, tell him that you are both getting married. So, when's the wedding?

  5. Are you serious? Of course, ask him! Poor guy's probably too scared to try a third time and possibly with good cause.

  6. Make a plan, book the flight to Vegas and get the licence... it's the only way he's going to take a chance!!

  7. I'm seeing consensus here ... love it!
