The Way to a Man's Heart...

by Helen Louise Brady from Miranda James' Cat in the Stacks series

I've known Charlie Harris ever since we were in elementary school together in Athena, Mississippi. We've been friends ever since he lent me one of his Hardy Boys books in fifth grade, and I lent him one of my Nancy Drews. Charlie's late wife, Jackie, was another friend, only she was Jackie Woods back then. The three of us spent a lot of time together through junior high, but in high school our paths began to diverge. I started dating a basketball player -- the tallest guy on the team and the only one I had to look up to -- while Charlie and Jackie became more inseparable than ever.

After college I went off to law school in the east, Charlie and Jackie got married and moved to Texas so Charlie could go to library school. We gradually lost touch, though occasionally we ran into one another when we all came home to Athena to visit family. I graduated from law school, practiced law for over fifteen years, decided I'd had enough, and off I went to Paris to do what I really wanted to do in the first place -- learn to cook French food and especially French pastries.

Fast forward to the past three years, when Charlie moved back to Athena after Jackie's death. I'd come back to Athena and opened the bakery I'd always wanted to have, and it was doing even better than I'd hoped. Charlie came back into my life, along with his beautiful Maine Coon cat, Diesel.

I'm not sure which one I fell in love with first, Charlie or Diesel, but I adore them both. Funny how you suddenly look at someone you've known all your life and see him in a completely different light. Fortunately for me, Charlie loves my food -- especially the gateau au chocolat. He's had a hard time after Jackie's death, because they were so deeply in love. He's doing much better now, and I believe he's finally willing to acknowledge the attraction between us. Can't wait to see what happens...

  2. I love this series! A little romance would be nice. If food is truly the way to a man's heart, then you have a good start with Charlie.

  3. Things develop a little further in the next book, Out of Circulation, due out 1/29/13. But don't expect Charlie to move too fast. :-)

  4. Don't they say the way to a man's heart is through a gateau au chocolat? Hmm, come to think of it, it's also the way to my heart . . .

  5. I'm pulling for you Helen. Between you and me, I think Charlie is reading for more.
