Funny Human Tricks

Diesel the Maine Coon from the New York Times-bestselling "Cat in the Stacks" series by Miranda James

If humans could purr like us cats, then my main human, Charlie Harris, would be purring a lot these days. He's happy that his offspring -- Sean and Laura -- are both here with him during the holidays. Laura is very good to me, and I like to spend time with her. Particularly nap time. She smells so good when I curl up next to her on the bed. Sean, not so much. He's nice to me, but he doesn't take the time to talk to me the way Laura and Justin do. Justin isn't part of Charlie's litter -- at least I don't think he is -- but Sean and Laura treat him like a littermate.

What makes Charlie really happy is when he spends time with Helen Louise. Spending time with Helen Louise makes me pretty happy too, especially when Charlie and I go to that place where she works. She always has nice bits of chicken for me, but there are often times when I don't know what she's saying to me. Apparently it's something called French. It sounds pretty when she says it, but it would be nice to know what it means.

More and more evenings lately Charlie takes me over to where Helen Louise lives, and we eat there. The food is wonderful, and afterwards Charlie and Helen Louise go and sit on the couch. They let me sit with them, but I have to say their behavior on the couch is a bit strange. They really don't know how to groom each other properly after a meal. They put their mouths together a lot and their arms around each other, but they never groom each other's hair. Of course, they don't have as much hair to groom as a cat does, the poor things, but still... you'd think they want to look their best and clean up after eating. I have occasionally tried to demonstrate the proper method -- Helen Louise's hair has a nice smell and taste to it, by the way -- but they don't seem to appreciate my instruction. I guess I should just give up on that one.

Excuse me, I hear the rattling of a bag, and I think Charlie must be putting more crunchies in my bowl...

  1. Diesel, If only you could help my Seneca groom herself. She has long hair that develops into these awful matts. She also screams bloody murder when I try to help her untangle. Sigh. Aleister, Calumet, and Licorice all do well...of course, they're all short haired.

  4. Lol, thanks for this fun post. I have to admit, I also wouldn't like a cat to groom my hair. Though my boyfriend brushes it for me when I ask nicely sometimes.

  9. I love this series, I read the first book. I knew I would love Diesel and I did. It was different having a male protagonist in a cozy mystery. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

  12. Too funny! A few days ago our 15 year old "kitty" Lacey started grooming my hair, something she had never done before. She really got into it at the crown of my head. I put a stop to it when she nipped me. Wouldn't it be a funny sight if Charlie and Helen Louise did groom each other's hair?

  23. Diesel you are a kindred spirit. Know how unappreciative humans can be about being educated on proper grooming. On my TBR list & hopeful of a win.

  36. Diesel, you are so right about humans and their silly habits. My Mom (Susan) has very long hair, and I like to try to brush it like she does. She always lets out a yelp when I sneak up behind her and try it. They will never learn. Your friend in catness, Sherry.
