Social Climbing 101

by the Ducote Sisters from the Cat in the Stacks mysteries by Miranda James

The elder of the two Ducote sisters glared impatiently at the antique wall clock while the younger gazed into a mirror and twitched her hair into place.

"Dickce, need I remind you that we have a Friends of the Library Board meeting to attend?" Miss An'gel resisted the urge to poke her sister in the back.

"No, An'gel, you don't need to remind me." Miss Dickce peered a little more closely at her image. "But if you think I'm leaving this house before my hair is done, then you're bound to be mighty disappointed."

"If you don't hurry up I swear I'll snatch you bald-headed." An'gel flexed the fingers of her right hand.

Dickce emitted an unladylike snort. "You'll do no such thing. And you know you're not annoyed with me, anyway. You just don't want to have to deal with Vera at the meeting." She stepped away from the mirror and headed for the front door. "Well, come on. You're the one in such an all-fired hurry to be gone."

An'gel didn't speak again until they were speeding away from River Hill, their ancestral home, in the late-model Lexus that Dickce drove like a Formula One racing car. "I don't want to deal with Vera Cassity any more than you do." She huffed out an irritated breath. "But you know as well as I do that she's going to insist that she hold this year's gala at Ranelagh. She is determined to be the doyenne of Athena society."

Dickce glanced sideways at her sister. "Which she'll never be unless you and I are both cold in the grave." She giggled. "Besides, we've already spiked her guns, haven't we?"

An'gel allowed herself a tight smile. "Yes, I suppose we have. But poor Charlie Harris. It's his first board meeting, and I don't know if he's ready for what is going to happen in his living room this evening."

"He'll survive. Forget about Vera for now," Dickce said. "I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see that handsome cat of his. Diesel is just about the sweetest thing I ever did see."

"He sure is." An'gel glanced down at her black vintage Chanel dress. "I suppose I should have worn something else."

You can find out what happens at the board meeting in Chapter One of Out of Circulation, on sale on January 29th.

  2. I am a bit biased where this book is concerned (you'll see why when you read the book or notice my name), but it is fantastic and I loved it! Dean's series continues to involve the characters in unique situations and each character's personalities shine in these scenes. Charlie is coming into his own throughout the series and especially in this book. And the new characters introduced in this book, provide for some extra entertainment.

  4. Dean gets better and better with each book. This one is full of lively and delightful characters in a setting I know so very well--and the plot is terrific. A great read.
