Where do I go from here?

By Jenna Hart of Final Sentence, a new COOKBOOK NOOK MYSTERY by Daryl Wood Gerber (aka Avery Aames)

What would it be like to own a cookbook store? I have to admit, I’ve never dreamed of this day. As of a few weeks ago, I was still an ad exec working at Taylor and Squibb in San Francisco, worrying about whether the Poppity Pop Popcorn “Colonel”—kid you not, we had a Colonel Kernel—was going to be able to say his lines—yes, he spoke—without flubbing. I mean, c'mon. How hard is it to say Poppity Pop Popcorn pops up plump and perfect?

But I don’t have to think about ads and actors and inner-office conflict any more because my Aunt Vera invited me to move into the cottage beside her seaside home in Crystal Cove—that’s in California, for any who don’t know…between Monterey and Santa Cruz, where I grew up—and help her re-open The Cookbook Nook. Truth be told, it was never opened in the first place. I’m not sure why. Aunt Vera hasn’t told me everything.

But I’m so excited. Sort of. I don’t know a thing about cookbooks except they’re beautiful and they smell good and all the fun things that go into a cookbook store simply amaze me, like aprons and arty spatulas, food puzzles and kids’ cooking items, culinary mysteries and collector salt and pepper shakers, just to name a few. Doesn’t that sound like heaven? A toy shop for adults.

Oh, and did I mention there’s a cafĂ©? Yum. I am a foodie. I’ve eaten everything from fried eel to roadside diner mac ‘n cheese. And I adore books. I’ve read all my life. Classics, genre fiction, you name it. Isn’t this simply the perfect match?

If only my husband were alive so I could share the adventure with him. How I miss David. But I can’t live in the past. One must move forward, my aunt would say. And she’s right. I have to. I’m coming back to Crystal Cove to find my smile. Am I doing the right thing?

Have you ever made a life change and wondered whether you were making the right decision?

  1. Maybe Colonel Kernel was too pooped to pop?

  2. I always wonder if I'm making the right decision. In the end I just have to pray that the decisions I make are the right ones even for my children. But it most of the time turns out ok. I am very excited for this book. Can't wait to read it. I am trying to request for my library to get it.

    1. TDiamond, I feel that way about my friends and family. I want to make sure that I make the right decisions for them, too. I take after my mom, in that regard. She was a lovely, giving woman, so full of life.

PS I'll make sure my author knows about your excitement. She'll be thrilled that you're telling your library. She's an avid reader and got most of her early books from a library. Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie. As she always says: Savor the Mystery!

  3. Dear Willow, how sweet to hear from you. You made my day. I laughed out loud. Yes, indeed, sometimes things overcook. LOL. Ew, don't you hate the smell of burnt popcorn? :)

    Hugs,

    Jenna

  5. I am making a major life decision right now to move from the Pacific Ocean where I have lived all my life, to another state. With any major life change worry is always part of the decision but I am sure this is the right decision for me. Looking forward to the new book, sounds great.
