What Goes Around, Comes Around ... Or Does It?

by Pearl Lee Gates
from The Cakes of Wrath (4th in the series, available for pre-order now)
A Piece of Cake Mystery by Jacklyn Brady

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Well hello there, y'all. My name is Pearl Lee Gates. Yes, I know it's a ridiculous name, but it's not my fault. It's certainly not the name I was born with. Or even the names of my first three husbands. Nope. Mr. Gates was husband number four, and I'm stuck with the name until I tie the knot again, which I'm sure will happen soon enough. Men are just naturally attracted to me. It's a blessing--and a curse.

But that's not why I'm here today. I'm here because I'm staying, temporarily, in New Orleans with my cousin Frances Mae Renier. You probably know her as Miss Frankie, and I'm sure you think she's just the smartest thing on the planet. Everyone does, you know. She's always come across that way, probably because she's just sure she is the smartest thing around.

God knows I love her. She's family, after all. But she's . . . well, she has a tendency to be a bit bossy, if you want to know the truth. Not that I'm talking bad about her. Bless her heart, I'm sure she doesn't mean to stick her nose in where it doesn't belong. She just can't seem to help herself. It's been a problem her entire life. All I can say is, she's lucky I'm a lady. A less refined woman might have been tempted to express her opinion.

Now here's the thing: Frances Mae has corralled her daughter-in-law -- that's Rita Lucero, y'all -- into giving me a job at Zydeco Cakes. The two of them expect me to work like a common laborer, and they don't even care that I might ruin my manicure! What Frances Mae has done is wrong on so many levels I can hardly wrap my mind around it. I know it sounds harsh, but maybe if Rita was a little more understanding about what I'm going through, she might not have run into so much trouble.

Frances Mae would laugh at the idea of karma, and I'm sure Rita would too. So I'm here looking for back-up. Do you believe that what goes around, comes around? That we reap what we sow in this world?

  6. Do we reap what we sow? Sometimes. But I am thankful that I do not always reap when I have sewn some not so good thing. I try to only sow good things but sometimes it doesn't quite work out that way.

    Sounds like a fun story!

  9. Can't wait for book number 4 to see how much trouble Rita can get herself into this time! I know Miss Frankie is not ready to let Rita move on but I hope she decides which of the men in her life she is ready to get to know a little better.
As for Karma - I hope to get back good vibes for giving them off but it never seems to work out that way. Sometimes I wonder how bad I must have been in another life to deserve some of the things that have happend in this one!

    1. Hi Susie! Rita does get herself into quite a bit of trouble in The Cakes of Wrath. It just seems to follow her around. I'm as curious as you are about her relationships with Sullivan and Gabriel. Honestly, I have no idea what will happen next on that score. Hoping your good karma catches up with you soon!!

  10. This series is so much fun. I love the name Pearl Lee Gates. Reminds me of other funny names. I went to school with Rose Thorne. Worked with Judy Judey. And met a woman named Anita Newman (I need a new man, lol).
    Can't wait to read #4!

    1. Oh Tina! Those are real names? They're wonderful! If I let myself I could race off into my imagination and make up people to fit them, but my editor would kill me! Rebel Without a Cake is due in just a couple of weeks.

    2. Definitely real names. Rose Thorne was born with that name. I don't know what ever happened to her after high school. Hopefully she married well! Judy Judey married into her's. And I'm not sure about Anita Newman. I remembered another...a girl I went to school with named Candy. She married a man with the last name Kane. Now she is Candy Kane and works as a kindergarten teacher. I'm sure her students love having a teacher with that name.

    1. Hi Carol! Thanks for stopping by. So you don't think Rita's current crop of troubles is because she was so mean to me? Well, you might be right. Whether it was karma or not, I still think she was wrong. Bless her heart. She tries hard, but my mama would roll over in her grave if she'd ever caught me doing the things Rita does.

    1. Hi Mary, You're right about Pearl Lee. She's is full of life. A blessing or a curse ... yes, and it's often hard to tell which is which at first. Some of the things that others might have called disasters in my life have turned out to be the biggest blessings once I got a few miles down the road :)

  22. O yes, I totally believe in that one, what goes around, comes around. And this one: don't do to others what you don't want to have done to yourself (bad translation, but you understand it I think).
I am looking forward to reading the book/series.

But why can't you just go back to your maiden name if you dislike this one?

    1. Oh yes Aurian, my mama brought me up on the golden rule. Not that she actually practiced it herself. Her version was a little twisted around, something like, "Don't do it to me if you don't want me to do it back." As for the maiden name issue, there are two reasons I've kept the name "Gates." One is that going to court over something like this would be extremely unladylike. The other is that I refuse to pay money and ask some old goat's permission to use the name I was born with. I'll find a new man soon enough and that will resolve the issue.

  25. Her name made me laugh! I would not like to get stuck with. When it came to naming my son, my mother jokingly suggested Will Barrow. The family pronounces the name as barrel!
I really look forward to enjoying this funny cozy. Going to add it to my wishlist.
