Kate Mertz and the Broken Hearted Ghoul

Hi! I'm Kate Mertz. I'm seven years old, and I live in Nashville, Tennessee. My teacher says I'm the best reader in her class - and my grandma is a ghost.

Shh! Don't tell my mom I told you. She'd be really upset. No one is supposed to know except us. My mom is afraid people might not understand why I have a ghost babysitting me when she isn't home.

It's pretty simple, really. I think anyone would understand that I'm just a kid, and I can't stay by myself. So what if my grandma is a ghost? My friend, Judy, stays with her dad because he's not working. I don't see any difference.

There's something up with my mom, too. I can't figure it out.

My mom and dad were both police officers. Then they went out to eat one night, and only my mom came back. There was a big funeral. Lots of people in uniforms shook my hand. They said it was going to be okay, and that I was lucky to still have my mom.

After that is when my mom started acting weird. She's not a police officer anymore. Now she picks up dead bodies in a taxi for a man named Abe. She's gone a lot at night. When she's home, she walks around. I don't think she sleeps anymore. Grandma says she's sad because Daddy is dead. I'm sad, too, but I still sleep.

Mommy doesn't eat much either. She doesn't lose weight, like Judy's mom did, but she doesn't eat - not like before my dad died. I know there's something going on.

Maybe when I'm eight, she'll tell me.
