GOTTA LOVE THOSE CATS!

By Lizzie Turner from the Ashton Corners Book Club Mysteries  by Erika Chase

I’ve been thinking about my cats, Brie and Edam, this morning. Well, it’s been hard not to. You know how cats are – always around when you might not need them to be and out of sight when you’re thinking about them!

This morning, it’s been the former. I’ve been trying to get some housework done, something I must admit, I let slide a bit during the school year. But now that I’m on summer holiday, I like to try at least to get the house spic and span.  When the vacuum is out, the cats take to their hiding places, some of which I haven’t even found. But now that I’m at the dusting stage, they’re underfoot. And on my shoulder. Or stretching up my leg, begging to be lifted up
.
That would be Edam. He’s the younger of my two Chocolate Point Siamese, eight years old. He’s still a scamp and as you can tell, can be very cuddly when he wants to, which is often. If I sit down for more than a second, he’s wanting to curl up in the crook of my left arm. We have to be precise here.
He also is the one who goes on a bug hunt every night. Skulking around the baseboards, checking corners, anywhere there might be a creepy crawly. I was worried about this and asked the vet. Her answer was that he was supplementing his diet. Ugh.

Brie is the lady of the house. At fifteen, she’s starting to show signs of early kidney problems but so far we’re managing it with diet. Since she’s been on this new low protein stuff, she’s lost weight (not that she was too large, mind you) and she’s lost years (or so it appears). She’s become more playful and sprightly. However, as someone increasing in years is allowed, she’s also becoming grouchier, much to Edam’s chagrin.

Let it be Brie who is initiating the play fighting, then it’s okay. But if Edam lays in wait and attacks her, oh boy, I can hear the growling and hissing throughout the house. What’s a mama to do?
However, when it's nap time all is forgotten and forgiven as they curl up together.
Back to the sitting down position. Edam has the arm, as I mentioned but Brie gets the lap. Always has. Always will. She also has my back, so to speak, when I’m sitting at my computer. I don’t know why I have the special lumbar support chair. Brie has to be sitting behind me in it. Which is actually better than Edam, who walks across the keyboard multiple times until finally settling down on the modem.

I love them dearly. Who doesn’t get attached to their fur babies!

And now that I’ve finally got them settled – Edam on modem, Brie behind me on chair – I’ll slip off and finish the dusting. I’ll get a few minutes on my own. But not much more.

Is there a fur baby in your house?  Cat or dog? You can admit to it being a dog. Edam and Brie are cool with that.

We have a dog, named Snickers. She is always laying on my chest or right next to me on the couch, when I try to sit or lay down.

  16. No fur babies here, either. We have spent too much time traveling to have any fur babies anymore. But when we did, I was always partial to the cats. Dogs have their places but cats were more my type.

  17. I have LOTS of fur babies in my house, and more than just cats and dogs! First off we have the cats: Aleister (16), Calumet (9), and Licorice (2), the dog: Sam (14), and the rats: Blizzard and Neige (2.5), Siegmund (1.5), Eccleston, Eros, and Nougat (2 months). I also have an off track thoroughbred who has his own place (I board him). Harley (who raced under the name Bad to the Bone) is 24.

  22. Three cats. The queen, Arwen, sits in a chair next to me while I'm on the computer and expects my "free" hand to be busily petting her. The big boy tuxedo, Whimsey, often demands my lap while on the computer. The little Abyssinian, ChiliBoy, likes to walk through, preferably hitting keys and/or blocking the monitor.

  26. We've got two cats - Tiger at 15 and Monty at 2, and one dog - Snoopy at 8ish (he was a rescue). Snoopy is pretty sure he's a cat and our addition of Monty shortly after my brother's cat Kiko passed away has brought Tiger back to life. We are all grateful for our furry family members!

  28. I have 5 sweet felines, Pandora, my grandkitties Tid-Bit and Marmalade, Skeeter and lastly Her Royal Highness Graciie and Shivers who thinks he is feline as well. We decided not to tell him any different. After all why destroy his delusion by telling him he is only a lowly d-o-g, All except Pandora and her daughter,Tid-Bit, and son, were cast offs and rejects. Skeeter we found in the rafters after a severe storm and Gracie was rejected by her mother, the furry daughter of a neighbor and friend. She was unable to take care of Gracie who required feeding every two hours for the first few weeks Then four hours and then six then weening to regular cat food.. All are so loving and sweet.

There have been others over the years that have stayed for a while we found forever homes for them. I can not remember a time when there was not a houseful of furry brothers and sisters to help me grow up. Then there were my own furry children who found me and knew I needed someone special to love. Funny how we think we are taking in strays to save them, but when in fact they are saving us.

I could talk about my babies forever.

  43. No fur babies in this house. Hubby is allergic, very, to cats. Someday we might have a dog, but right now we live in a parsonage so we're not willing to take that responsibility. Now, my granddaughter has 3 cats and a dog. Two of those cats are big ones, and Loki is a Bengal. Gertrude is a Bloodhound. She is living with her mother )our daughter) and daddy, and they already had 3 dogs -- well, technically one of those is actually the granddaughter's as well. However, Jake died a couple months ago, so now it's a total of 3 outside dogs (mostly outside), and 3 inside cats. And now longer can hubby & I go to spend the night there. Ah well, we just get a motel room when we go.

  48. I have 2 dogs, Shelby 5 yrs old Husky/Shepherd mix and Frankie 1 1/2 a aussie Shepherd/chow/uhm a whole bunch of stuff mixed into 32 lbs of mischief. And 2 cats, the youngest and newest family member The Phantom Menace is 9 months, and Merlin Lucifer who is 16 and like your little girl has Feline Chronic Kidney Failure, but unlike your girl he now goes 2 x's a week to get fluids, and has lost a lot of weight, he's a maine coon mix and in his youth weighed 16-17 lbs, now he's just under 9lbs. But he's still thriving, and trying to avoid the kitten so he doesn't have to beat him down. But Phantom thinks it's a game and chases him around the house hence the Menace part of his name. Merlin earned the middle name Lucifer at a very young age, he was raised by a Chow Chow dog, okay his big brother from another species, and still doesn't realize he's not the "big dog" but everyone is the does know this and respects it.
