Heating Things Up!

By Maxie Pierce from the soon to be released “Death by Devil’s Breath”

So, you like your chili peppers hot, huh?  I know just how you feel.  I love chili peppers, the spicier the better.  After all, zing is as important to chili as it is to life!

I ought to know.  Now that my dad, Texas Jack Pierce, is missing, I’m helping my annoying half-sister, Sylvia, run his Hot-Cha Chili Seasoning Palace.  Sure it’s just a small catering truck we pull behind our RV as we travel the country from Chili Showdown to Chili Showdown contest, but it also just happens to be my favorite place on earth.  Peppers and spices and delicious chili mixes . . . oh, my!  There’s nothing I like better than dressing in my the gigantic Chili Chick costume, putting on my stilettoes and dancing in front of the Palace to attract customers.  Like Jack, I’m all about spreading the word about chili and peppers.

It would be the ideal gig if murder didn’t keep getting in the way.

Back in Taos when we had the adventure I talk about in “Chili Con Carnage,” it was Roberto, a low-life roadie, who bit the big one.  Now we’re in Las Vegas and instead of getting to enjoy Sin City, I’ve got a dead comedian on my hands.  Bad enough, yes?  Worse since he keeled over in his bowl of chili in the middle of our big Devil’s Breath chili competition.

And suspects?  Let me tell you, there are plenty of them.  It’s enough to make this Chili Chick lose her cool!

No worries, though.  I’ll work through the investigation and while I’m at it, I’ll dig into a big bowl of spicy goodness.  Chili always helps me think better!

You can still take part in the big Killer Character summer give-away. Just leave a comment (along with your email so I can contact you!) to this post and you’ll be entered to win a copy of “Chili Con Carnage,” book #1 in the Chili Cook-Off mystery series.  A winner will be announced on Monday.

  9. Your series like a hot read and it's been on my TBR for a while, but this Texas girl can only handle reading about chili peppers, she can't eat them. I know I'm an embarrassment to my home state.

  15. My chili with peppers is great, but with peppers it is exceptional. My family and friends agree with me and as of yet I have never found a chile more flavorful. Now that I have sounded like a conceited jerk I admit chili is one of my favorite foods. Culinary mysteries are one of my favorite genres. I would love to read and a story using a chili competition as a central point.

  39. Being from New Mexico, I love chili peppers and chili. I don't get much of either since we're now in Oklahoma (and hubby isn't a fan of the hot spicier stuff), so I make do with banana peppers on my sub sandwiches.
I would love to get on the ground floor, so to speak, with this series. :)

  40. WooHoo! The number one in the series...I love to start from the beginning when I start a new series. I make a pretty good pot of chili...just spicy enough for me. My DH and anyone else who happens by always needs to doctor it up with hot peppers or Tobasco. I'm a lightweight for sure! Thanks for the give-a-way.
