Living the Spooky Life

By Tigger, the ginger kitten
From Stirring the Plot, the 3rd in the nationally bestselling Cookbook Nook Mysteries

Living the Spooky Life…

People. Cats. Everywhere. In costumes. All of them. I’ve never seen anything like it. Some of them are freaking me out. The ones in the ghoul faces with blood dripping down their face and out holes in their heads? Yowl. It’s so weird looking. Very odd. Why would a human put that stuff on their cats?

Jenna put a witch hat on me. It doesn’t fit perfectly on my head. It sort of tilts, so I have to move my head around to keep it on straight. Jenna is laughing and saying I’m so handsome. I love with she says that.

I like being in the Black Cat parade. No, not all of us are black. It’s just the name of it. This is my first parade ever. I don’t mind that people have come up to us. One said I was pretty cute. Another nuzzled me under the chin. That feels pretty good.

The good thing is I haven’t seen any dogs around. Jenna said the mayor wouldn’t allow it. Dogs are getting their own parade around Christmas, whatever that is.

I hope when the parade is over, we get to go back to The Cookbook Nook. We have all sorts of projects ready for kids in the children’s corner. I like playing with the kids. They drop things on the floor, which is kitty heaven, if you ask me. String, paper, you name it. Just yesterday, kids were making—

Whoa! Jenna, where are we going? Why are you running? A cat is missing? My nose twitched. We were passing the cotton candy vendor. And the pet adoption tent. Lots of cats there!

Jenna, slow down. My hat bobbled. Jenna!

What could have sent her into such a tizzy?

Slow down!

Jenna screeched to a stop. In seconds she was breathing easier. The cat had been found. I, on the other hand, was worn to a frazzle.

Sheesh, I wish I understood humans better. Do you get your human? Got any tips for me?

    1. Oh, Truffles, you should. The parade is so much fun. I met a few new pals there. Two of them were dressed up like reindeer! They're the chief of police's cats. Donner and Blitzen. She found them on Christmas.

  3. Humans are mysterious creatures that are often clumsy and prone to staring at large boxes of light. Sometimes there are cool images and interesting sounds from the light box. Remember if your human becomes entranced by one of these light boxes, it is your job to break the spell. Demand attention from your human. If that does not work, place yourself between the human and the box. Try to maintain eye contact. Remember you must break the spell or it will be a long time before you will be fed, cuddled, or appreciated. Good Luck!

    1. Oh, Jenna doesn't do that. She seems to stare at things called books. They have pages and words. She loves looking at those. Or she likes stare at something big and white. A canvas, I think. It's a very smelly project, but she hums while she does whatever it is she's doing. So I think she likes it.

  4. Humans are stressed a lot. Pets, cats and dogs have special abilities to calm humans. You just need to cuddle your human when this happens. Know they love you and will respond to your touch. Good luck on Halloween.

    1. Yes, Jenna likes to cuddle. She doesn't dance as much as me, but I think she hopes to. That's something.

  5. Tigger remember where you came from and where you are now. There is a special reason why you were blessed to be where you are. Enjoy it.

  6. Hi Tigger. My name is Licorice and I am a black cat-I think I'd like a Black Cat Parade. My brother Aleister is also black-but he's very old, maybe he could sit and watch. My sister Calumet is grey, she's not much into group activities. But guess what!? Yesterday my human came home with something in a crate...it was a kitten...an orange tiger kitten, just like you. Momma says we can't meet him yet-but I can't wait. I think he'll wrestle better than Aleister!

    1. Oh, Licorice, I do hope you'll come to Crystal Cove so we can meet. It's such a fun time right now. Lots to do. And I hope you like your new brother...it is a brother, right? Tiger kittens do wrestle great! I know.

    2. Yes, the new kitten is a boy. I get another brother! He doesn't have a name yet though...I wonder what it will be? I would love to meet you too. We could wrestle! And I could teach you my Qtip game. I can't wait to show the new kid!
