You live where?
Evie Bloomfield here and I’ve come to
Mackinac Island from Chicago. Some of my friends say that one place is just
like another but they are so wrong. So I gave them instructions. This is how
you know you are on Mackinac Island and you are so not in Chicago.
... if you have ever gotten frostbitten and
sunburned in the same week. (though truth be told this could be Chicago too)
... if you can identify an Ohio accent.
…if you don’t need car insurance
…if a fender bender is a two-bike crash
... if you learned to pilot a boat before the
training wheels were off your bike.
... if you point at the palm of your right
hand when telling people where you live
... if "Down South" means Toledo.
... if a Big Mac is something you can drive
across.
... if you have as many Canadian coins in
your pockets as American ones.
... if the trees in your backyard have
spigots.
... if you know that a place called
"Kalamazoo" really exists.
... if you bake with "soda" and
drink "pop".
... if you know how to play Euchre.
... if fudge and bicycles remind you of home sweet home.
... if you can name all 5 of the Great Lakes,
and point to their locations around your left and right hands.
... if you know that Pontiac and Cadillac are
cities.
... if you can actually pronounce Ypsilanti.
... if you own only three spices - salt,
pepper and ketchup.
... if you design your Halloween costumes to
fit over a snowsuit.
... if you keep track of the miles you put on
your snow blower.
... if you think sexy lingerie is tube socks
and a flannel nightie.
... if your snow blower gets stuck on the
roof.
…if you save your Christmas tree to help mark
the path across a frozen lake for the snow mobiles
... if summer takes place the second week of
July
... if the kids drive to school in a snow
mobile.
... if you know the 4 seasons: Winter, Still
Winter, Almost Winter, and Yesterday was summer.
... if you consider it a sport to gather your
food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that
the food will swim by.
... you know the day the horses get off the
ferry and return to the island
... if you often switch from "heat"
to "A/C" in the same day.
... if you see people wearing camouflage at
social events (including weddings.)
... if down South to you means Ohio.
... if you go out to a fish fry every Friday.
…if the whole town is 500 people strong
... if you know what a Yooper is.
... if you know that UP is a place, not a
direction.
This is how you know you’re from Mackinac Island. So, what defines someone from your neck of the woods? A special word? Food? Custom? Let me know and I’ll give away two Geared for the Grave totes.

Hi everyone. Hope you have fun visiting Mackinac Island. It truly is different living here.
ReplyDeleteHi Duffy, I've already got this on my advance list and can't wait to get my greedy little hands n it. Bwa Ha Haaaa.
ReplyDeleteHi, Nora!! Thanks tons! Smooches to you. :-)
DeleteSince I'm from Michigan, I can attest to everything on your list. We went from being almost 90 degrees last week, to being in the 50s this week. So, fall as arrived! Can't wait to read about your adventure on Mackinac Island. It's a fabulous place to visit!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Rebecca. I loooove Mackinac Island. What a fun place. We’ve been having the same weather here too. Lordy, where did the summer go and so cool so fast.
DeleteThe only New Jersey foods that I know are local are Taylor Ham (pork roll) and salt water taffy.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy. I am such a fan of salt water taffy and all the flavors and colors. Happy candy indeed.
DeleteI enjoyed this glimpse and learned from this post. Food, yes, especially red and green chilis. Not for me but very popular. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHi Petite! Oh red and green chills. I am just starting to appreciate them and the wonderful zing they ad do foods. Yummm.
DeleteLoved your post today. Food is always a winner no matter where. Pizza, pasta and more. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHi, Traveler. I love talking food too. It really defines a place. Pasta is my fav. What a meal.
DeleteEastern Shore of Maryland-the absolute best blue crabs ever! Mackinac Island is one of our stops on our 2015 road trip, cannot wait to visit! Have pre-ordered your new book and looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteHi, Margie. What a great trip you’ll have. Take lots of pics and put them on FB. Thanks tons for ordering Geared, I truly appreciate it. My daughter lived in Baltimore. She sure misses the food. The crab cakes are out of this world!
DeleteMOA- Mall of America!
ReplyDeleteHi, Karen. YES! I so need to get there. I do love to shop.
DeleteI lived most of my life in North East Illinois but now live in Ohio. We call it pop not soda. When giving directions we used Lake Michigan as a guide. We wear flip flops in March even if there is snow on the ground.
ReplyDeleteHi, Candace. I love Michigan. Truly God’s country. Welcome to Ohio!!!
DeleteA delightful post. Even though I now live in Florida, Michigan is my home place. I have especially enjoyed the eastern side of the state, but have been to Mackinac Island numerous times. A wonderful place to go.

Hi Sherry. To Fla from Michigan. The one thing you won’t miss are the winters. Did you give away your snow shoves? That’s what happens here in Cincy when someone heads south.LOL
DeleteBack East... To me the East refers to New York and other states along the Atlantic, Illinoiis, Michigan, Iowa, etc. are not. I realize most states are east of California, but that does not make them back East.
ReplyDeleteOh I agree. To me East is the New England states.
DeleteA lot of these could apply to Wisconsin, LOL. I have been to Mackinac Island but it did not agree with me. All I could smell was horse--when I could actually smell something. Next tiem I'll know to double the dose of allergy meds before the ferry. :-\
ReplyDeleteHi, Heather. I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy the experience. I just love being on an island with no cars. Such a treat. And then there’s the fudge. :-)
DeleteHi, all and thanks for playing along. Winners of the Geared for the Grave totes are Rebecca and Sandy 6265. Send me you mailing address DuffyBrown@DuffyBrown.com
ReplyDeleteSee you all next month.
I hail from northern Minnesota. Here every menu has walleye cooked several way on it---and summer is just known as "the tourist season".
ReplyDeletesuefarrell.farrell@gmail.com
Hi, Sue!! I love walleye. Some good eatin’ for sure . Minnesota is Prairie Home Companion territory. What a great show.
ReplyDeleteGarrison is fantastic!
Lookin forward to yer book there Miss Bloomfield. Hope the delivery gets through, comin' in the middle of winter like that. That Mackinac Island is a nice place there, 'specially when all of the fudgies and trolls go back home.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your little bloggy thingy there, but didn't understand some of it. Seems like a lot of common sense to me.
Keep up the good writing and keep yer stick on the ice.
Hi, Robert! Wonderful hearing from you. Yes, Mackinac is a different world in the winter after they take off the horses, they bring out the snowmobiles and the ice makes. Nothing lovelier than the Lilac Festival and the fried green beans at the Stang are totally delish. :-)
