A New Life By Skye Mertz from Dead Girl Blues

Book #2 in the Taxi for the Dead Paranormal Mysteries

A New Life
By Skye Mertz
From Dead Girl Blues
By Joyce and Jim Lavene

What would you do make sure your son or daughter had a good life after you were dead?

Probably most of you are thinking about insurance policies and which part of the family should take care of your child after you pass.

I didn’t have that option. My husband, Jacob, and I died on the same day in a wreck that was suspicious to say the least.

Hours before I died, my mother-in-law – the only other family I have – told me that she was dying of cancer and had less than six months to live. There wasn’t much to think about after that.

So when Abraham Lincoln Jones made me a deal to live another twenty years – long enough to see my five-year-old daughter, Kate, become an adult – I didn’t hesitate. I took him up on it, and I didn’t ask too many questions.

Maybe if I’d known my mother-in-law was going to come back as an annoying ghost, I might have changed my mind. She’s there every day with her same attitudes and dismal feelings about me. I was never good enough for her son.

It doesn’t matter. I’m not there for her. I’m there for Kate so she doesn’t have to go into the foster care program like I did. It was a hard way to grow up. I’m sparing her that much anyway.

Not that this life we lead is near normal, or what I would have wished for her, but she’s safe and loved. She’s not alone and wondering why Jacob and I left her.

And while I love my daughter, there is another reason I decided to stay here for the next twenty years. Jacob was murdered. Me too, I guess. I plan to find out who did it before I pass gently into that good night.

I guess you could say I’m a zombie with an agenda, and an attitude. But Abe doesn’t like it when I call his people zombies, so I call them LEPs for Life Extended People. He doesn’t want me to investigate Jacob’s death either.

But what Abe doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

  2. Zombies? Not something I would normally choose to read---but if Joyce and Jim wrote it, the book can't really be graphic and gory---so I want to give it a try. Thanks for the contest.

    1. Not graphic or gory - you know us, Sue. More a tale of a family struggling to cope with the weird life they find themselves in - and a mystery or two! Thanks for being here!

  3. I have always avoided anything to do with zombies, but Dead Girl Blues is different. Joyce and Jim's take, on this genre, made it interesting, with LEPs (life extended people), who live as close to "normal" as possible. It isn't a cozy mystery...one part scared me (I'm a sissy), but you find yourself rooting for Skye and wanting to find out what happens next?
Thanks, Joyce and Jim, for always coming up with new/different book ideas!

    1. Thanks, Patricia! We think of it as a cozy - one that pushes the limits - but still cozy!
