from Peg Cochran's Cranberry Cove Series
I've known Monica ever since I stole Monica's father away from her mother (Monica's words, not mine) and she'd never been the whimsical type. More analytical and logical than the day dreaming sort. So I was really surprised when she agreed to come with me to a tarot reading at Tempest Storm's shop, Twilight.
"You don't really believe in this stuff, do you?" Monica asked as we made our way down Beach Hollow Road.
"That depends on what Tempest is going to tell me." I sidestepped a puddle on the sidewalk--I didn't want to get my stiletto-heeled booties wet. Of course Monica was, as usual, wearing a sensible pair of boat shoes. "If the news is good, I plan on believing it."
We pushed open the door to Twilight. Tempest was behind the counter in a long, flowing purple tunic, her black hair with the gray streak running through it piled loosely on top of her head. She looked like the high priestess of some ancient religion. Tarot cards were spread out in front of her.
"You want to go first?" I nudged Monica.
Monica shrugged. "Why not." Her tone was dry but her face had become flushed.
Tempest turned some cards over and stared at them.
"Is it bad?" Monica asked, alarm plain in her voice.
Tempest looked up with a smile. "It looks like love is about to find you."
I noticed Monica glance out the window toward Book 'Em, Greg Harper's shop. Her flush deepened.
"Are you ready for this?" I asked.
Monica smiled. "I think so."
