A Visit with Hank McCall and GIVEAWAY

Available for pre-order!
Releases October 11th, 2016
Character:  Hank McCall
Series: Vintage Toyshop Mysteries
Book: Death of a Toy Soldier
Author: Barbara Early

Someone once said, “You’re only young once, but you can be immature forever.” The way I look at it, sometimes that’s the way to go.

I’m not talking about not doing your job or taking care of your family. I’ve done both—not perfectly, mind you. But I retired after thirty years on the police force and raised two great kids. And I wasn’t about to sit in a rocking chair or take river cruises when I retired. Instead, I sank my pension into a Main Street storefront and opened a vintage toyshop called Well Played.

Why? First of all, who doesn’t like the smell of caps in the morning? Or to be surrounded by model trains, Lincoln Logs, and even older tin toys. The shop is a magical place, filled with play, memories, and nostalgia.

Don’t tell my kids, but I think I like the way the shop has changed their lives best of all. See, life wasn’t always good to them. My long hours. Their mother’s drinking problem and later her death. They grew up a little too fast. But Liz moved back home and now manages the shop. And I’m rather happy to see that she’s finding her playful side again. She hosts regular board game nights, and her laughter fills the place.

Parker is a wildlife rehabilitator, living from grant to grant, unfortunately, but he seems to make it work. He married a girl named Cathy who runs the doll room at the shop. She’s a little bit…chatty…at times, but she’s good for him and to him, and I couldn’t be happier with his choice. Just waiting on grandkids.

GAME AND GIVEAWAY: And because I’m fond of games, I have one for you! In the comments below, name ONE property on a standard US Monopoly board (including railroads and utilities). The prize is a small stuffed animal and a Scrabble necklace. Please leave your email in a safe format in the comment (yourname AT provider DOT com) so I can contact you.

Fine print: On August 30th at noon, I will draw one property card at random. I’m awarding a maximum of five winners, and if more than five people pick the same winning property, five winners will be chosen at random from the correct entries. Please enter only once: multiple entries in the same contest will result in disqualification. Stuffed animal may vary from the image shown. For this contest, (sorry!) US entries only.

  1. Marvin Gardens. My sister and I divided up the properties we were allowed to buy so the game would last longer and the yellow ones, Marvin Gardens, Ventnor Avenue and Atlantic Avenue were mine.

  11. Oh...PARK PLACE! Although JAIL is a popular one, too, for those living on Park Place. Hey, Hank...teehee, I am retired and choose the rocking chair for a bit: sleeping in way past the typical alarm time, savoring two cups of coffee in my pjs, reading book written for adults not the age of my students (8-12 year olds), and being with hubby 24/7. But, now the rocking chair has turned into a desk, and editing and reviewing books is a passion along with lunches and visiting my niece in the big city.
