BLACK CAT APPRECIATION DAY
By Sabrina Tate, from The Black Cat Knocks on Wood
People love holidays. They look forward to Labor Day weekend, right around the corner, followed by Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The most special occasion for me and my black cat, Hitchcock, though, is Black Cat Appreciation Day. I plan to launch a big celebration come Wednesday, August 17th.I'll take Hitchcock into town and tell everyone we see about the special occasion to celebrate the greatness of black cats everywhere. I’ve already picked up some special tuna treats for Hitchcock to show him how much I appreciate him coming to live with me in Lavender, heart of the Texas Hill Country.
Not everyone in Lavender appreciates Hitchcock as I do. Apparently, someone came up with a story way back when about a cat known as the Bad Luck Cat who lived near the Glidden River in a spot very much like the place where Hitchcock and I live. Now I ask – who in their right mind would seriously believe Hitchcock, some thirty years later, is that same cat? It’s a ridiculous concept, right? Well, you wouldn’t believe how many people I’ve run into in the past eight months who call Hitchcock the Bad Luck Cat without even giving the impossibility of him being the same cat a second thought.
Hitchcock is like black cats everywhere - a loving and faithful companion. Granted, he sometimes involves me in troublesome situations – like when he leads me to find a dead body. Or when he hitches a ride into town with unsuspecting motorists. Or when his hair is found at a crime scene. Or . . . you get the picture. More important, though, are the times he alerts me to danger and especially the times I credit him with saving my life. Hitchcock is not a bad luck cat because there is no such thing as a cat that causes bad luck. So please help us in celebrating black cats everywhere on Wednesday. Encourage the adoption of black cats. And, give your cat a hug from us.
