Keeping a Low Profile

Skye Denison Boyd from Denise Swanson’s New York Times bestselling Scumble River mystery series.

Hi! My name is Skye Denison-Boyd. Mrs. Denison-Boyd to my students. I’m a school psychologist and everyone is having a bit of trouble remembering that I changed my name in December when I married the love of my life, chief of police, Wally Boyd. I live and work in my hometown, Scumble River, Illinois. It’s 75 miles south of Chicago and 75 years behind the times, which is why the high school principal can’t be bothered with the hyphen and insists on calling me Mrs. Boyd. Oh. Well. I pick my battles with him and the name issue isn’t one of them.

I love my profession. Especially with only aAmazon month or so left of school. Still, even though a lot of the kids have called it quits for the year, I keep trying until the bitter end. Which is why I decided to try an innovating new counseling technique, pet therapy, with my socially awkward fourth grade boys group.

I got all the right permissions—principal, parents, insurance company—but then a school board member stuck his nose in and tried to call a halt to the sessions before they even started. And it didn’t help matters that this bozo was determined to oust my godfather from the position of board president.

I put up such a fuss that my friend Trixie, the school librarian, warned me that if this guy ever ended up dead, I’d better have a good alibi since I’d be the prime suspect. She is so not funny. But ever since she started writing a murder mystery, she sees homicide around every corner.

Still, she has a good point. Maybe I better just avoid the guy until the whole brouhaha blows over. In four or five weeks the veterinarian and his animals will be gone and no one will care.

Besides, I’m pregnant so just keep your fingers crossed for me that no bodies turn up. I am not in the mood to be investigating a murder.
