Making it Memorable

by J.J. Tanner from the Dinner Club Mysteries by Linda Wiken

In case you haven’t read the latest adventure of the Culinary Capers Dinner Club, I’ll be happy to fill you in. Except, I won’t mention the murder, whodunnit or how we helped catch the killer. I’ve been a member of the dinner club for the past couple of years now and besides being my best friends in Burlington, VT they’re also the best cooks, or so I like to think. I’m totally impressed with all the kitchen skills they possess and I’ve been hoping some of these would rub off on me.

I love food and I particularly love cookbooks with color pictures in them. So, I figure I’m starting from a solid base. And they have been complimenting me on my dishes more regularly, so I must be on the right track.

But I digress. As an event planner, I get to come up with some cool ideas for a wide range of events – and best part, I get paid to do it! Think non-stop party planning. But not all the events are frivolous. At our firm, Make It Happen, owned by my best friend, Skye Drake, we have corporate clients as well. But my favorites at the not-for-profits, the events designed to raise money for worthy causes.

Take the Casino Cruise Night I planned for People and Causes, the literacy group. It did bring in a nice sum to help with their work but it also ended with a murder. And, of course, since I planned it, I felt just terrible. Especially when one of the Culinary Capers members was the prime suspect.
That’s all I’ll say about it, though. I hope you’ll read about us in Roux the Day, the second Dinner Club Mystery.

And keep an eye open for a very special PI, Ty Devine.

What’s the most memorable party you’ve planned?

  1. Years ago, I legally changed my first name. To celebrate, every I had a party on that date. I had a "Name Day" Party. One year, it was a Black & White party - no colors other than those two allowed. Except me! I work a silk teal blouse. One year it was a "Wizard of Oz" party. I don't remember which character I was (wish I did). Had games connected to the series, as well as prizes. One year I had a "Trademark" party - there was fierce rivalry for the "Tony the Tuna™" lamp. All of these were a blast!
