Smugglers on the hunt, a police chief on the run and the annual bikes and kites festival have the Mackinac Island regulars riding in circles
Hi, Cleveland here. Bambino and I live on Mackinac Island in a bike shop owned by Evie Bloomfield. Mackinac is one of those places stuck in time. Fact is it’s like the 1800s with no cars. Everything is horses and bikes. And there are parades for the tourists we call fudgies ‘casue they eat so much fudge. Oink!
The parades have bands and music and famous people like George Washington, Betsy Ross…you get the picture. Well, Rudy, the guy who used to own the bike shop, takes on the character of Mark Twain and Twain had cats named Cleveland and Bambino. Of course we are much cuter than the original Cleveland and Bambino
The thing is it’s time for the annual Bikes and Kites festival. Bikes rule on the island and kites are a terrific way to have fun. Ever hear of land and sea breeze? Well when you live on an island the breeze keeps kites up forever.
This sounds neat and it is except this year there’s a dead guy on the pier. Evie found him when she went to get her latest shipment of kites to sell at the shop. Who is this guy? And why is there a champagne bottle tucked under his arm?
I think Nate Sutter our local police chief knows something about all this. He says he doesn’t but he’s jumpier than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs these days. Nate’s not always been the police chief on the island, he was undercover in Detroit. Let me tell you, that covers a lot of territory.
Anyway I’m going to try and enjoy the Bikes and Kites event. Have you ever flown a kite? Made your own? And what do you think about bikes? You’ve probably ridden one but have you ever ridden a tandem bike?
Hugs from Bambino and Cleveland there on Mackinac Island.
