Happy Pet Mother’s Day!

By Bella, of Tracy Weber’s Downward Dog Mystery Series

Yikes!  Mother’s Day is only two days away, and I haven’t gotten anything for Kate, my human companion, yet. Kate’s not my real mother—at least not biologically—but she rescued me, and giving her a Mother’s Day gift seems like the least I can do.

The thing is, I’m plum out of ideas. A card is just so … human. I’d dig up some flowers for her, but the last time I did that, she didn’t seem all that happy. I shopped in the trash yesterday (every self-respecting canine knows that’s where the good stuff is kept) but Kate seemed a little cranky about that, too.  I thought I’d save one of my treats for her, but I can’t seem to stop myself from eating them

I need your advice. My author friend Tracy has offered to  give one of her mysteries to a lucky winner who leaves an idea for me in the comments below. She’ll select the winner after noon Seattle time on Sunday. Help a pup out, would you?

And give all of your fur kids a belly rub from me.

Give Bella a Mother's Day gift idea in the comments below, and you will be entered to win your choice of any book in the Downward Dog Mystery series.  Winner will be chosen after noon on Mother's Day.

Good luck!

  1. I think you should do something nice for her. You can give her a day of peace and quiet and do whatever she wants.

  2. I think Kate would love anything you get her, but that doesn't mean you have to buy anything. She would treasure you just showing her you love her. Maybe that means taking her for a walk so she gets good exercise to keep her heart healthy (and to lose the pounds she might gain from the candy others may give her). Or it could be laying close to her to keep her warm if the breeze is cool or the a/c gives her a chill. It might even be barking if you are doing it to protect her from herself - like not watching where she's walking and about to trip. In other words, just be yourself, look up in her eyes with your great big puppy eyes and let her know you love her. After all, love is the greatest gift we can give anyone.

  3. I think that Kate would like your undivided attention with lots of cuddles. Also, maybe try not to eat any of her toys! bobandcelia@sbcglobal.net

  6. If saving a treat is too difficult, what about playing with her using a favorite toy?

  7. Well, you can always pre-wash her dishes. That's what my dogs did for me. I only have cats now-they said don't fight and try to be nice to your brothers and sisters. When I told them you were an only dog they suggested letting your mom clip your toes nails without fussing, not vomiting on the carpet, and helping her read and write her next book! 8. Bella, offer to help plant her vegetable garden. You can dig the holes and she can plant the plants. You might even find buried treasure! Just make sure you dig where she wants the garden; she might get grumpy otherwise. (My girls are helping me plant my veggie garden as well!)

  9. Your mom would love just spending the day with you walking, playing, and getting cuddles and kisses from you. You could give you mom a toy or a good stick to the two of you to play together. musiqmom(at)yahoo(dot)com

  10. Sweetie your mom would be happy with any loving or cuddles you gave her. Give her a sweet kiss in the morning after you let her sleep in a bit. Then let her decide where she wants to walk on your walk. After you get back, give her a cuddle (only if you didnt roll in anything) and lean into her showing her how much you appreciate all she does for you. Eat all your food and dont beg for anything. Then at night go do your business without barking at anything and come back in to join her in bed. What more could anyone ask for. Good luck!

  11. I like all off the above but I really appreciate it when my puppers catch the varmin that eats my veggies in the garden. Maybe you should do something along those lines.

  15. I think youe mom would like some cuddling from you. I am a dog mom, and nothing pleases me more. Peace and quiet can be good too, but don't spoil her too much. She might become demanding!

  16. Time with a loved one counts for a lot. Letting them know they are loved, cared for. A nice leisurely walk to enjoy the scenery.Sitting quietly together and enjoying a sunrise, or sunset. A good game of fetch. And cuddles. deepotter (at) peoplepc (dot) com

  21. I think it would be nice to start the day off by letting mom sleep in a little longer in the morning. On walks, to not pull on the leash and to walk next to mom. At home, no begging, put all your toys away when done playing with them, to let mom brush you and let mom cut your nails and give any medications necessary without fussing. I think it's nice to not bark without reason, to not chew up anything that isn't your toys, to help mom around the house by picking up any family member's laundry that is on the floor and placing it in the hamper. Don't jump on visitors, be a good dog-host. Sit nice in the backseat of the car and don't try to be the driver or co-pilot, it's safer in the backseat. Don't attack the vacuum cleaner. Finally, give mom lots of cuddles all day and lots of kisses.

  22. The gift of time is the best gift. How about spending the day snuggling next to Kate. Maybe you can suggest a movie and some treats as an option.

  23. Hi Bella! My furbabies, Jack, Jill, and Leo, say to let mommy sleep in a little longer than usual in the morning. Then go for a nice leisurely walk at her speed (don't rush her this time) so see can be relaxed to whole time. When you get back, Jack says take a nap so she can do whatever she wants without your undivided attention. Later in the evening, go find her favorite blanket or throw and bring it so you two can get comfy and read a really good book. Thanks for giving my mommy a chance to win a great book!
