Spotlight on Old Firehouse Books, Fort Collins, CO
As recommended by Maggie Sefton and Kelly Flynn.
Old Firehouse Books is located in the historic section of Fort Collins called Old Town. Old Town is the heart of the city and where this northern Colorado town first came to life. The bookstore is located on Willow Street, one of the two cross streets that marked the site of the first shops to appear in the 1880's. And farther down that street the original firehouse was built before the turn of the century. The fire station had vacated the picturesque building with bell tower years before. Various businesses rented the property but never seemed to become successful---until the Book Rack, a favorite Fort Collins indie bookstore, moved into the old fire station. The Book Rack had been steadily building its clientele even though the surroundings were cramped. Its selection of new books started outnumbering the used section. And bestselling authors from Colorado and Wyoming made it a point to schedule signings in its cramped-but-cozy front of the shop. Once the shop moved into its spacious new surrounding last year, the hardworking owners decided that the bookstore should be fittingly called Old Firehouse Books. Now, there is plenty of space for new and old customers alike to browse through the book-filled aisles and enjoy the turn of the century architecture which is still preserved.
