Do you believe rumors?

Clair Bessette chiming in
From Lost and Fondue by Avery Aames

Hi. I'm Clair, the twin to Amy. You probably know her because she's so funny. She doesn't mind being the center of attention, but in a good way, know what I mean? She loves to dance and twirl and sing at the top of her lungs. She reminds me of my great-grandmother.

I'm more like my dad. Smart but quiet, though I don't think that's a bad thing. I like to watch people. I love to read. And I adore animals. Rags--that's my Aunt Charlotte's cat--is probably my best friend. He likes when I let him sit in my lap and I read out loud to him. I think we get each other, you know? My favorite books are mysteries. My Aunt Charlotte introduced me to them. I also like to paint and do crochet. I'm very excited because my father's girlfriend, Meredith, is inviting artists to town and she's throwing a big party at the old Ziegler winery, and I think we get to go. Waiting to hear...I hate waiting! But if we do, there will be art hanging on the walls. Really good art.

I've been reading up on the history of Providence, and there's a lot written about the winery. There's talk about pirates leaving treasure in the basement and ghosts and buried bodies. I don't believe any of it...at least, I don't think I do, but with Halloween just around the corner...

No, no, no, Daddy says not to talk myself into fear. I'm nine. I'm old enough to not believe in fairy tales or scary tales.

I'm excited about the party--if I get to go. There's going to be fondue. My Aunt Charlotte makes the best fondue! All different kinds. Amy may have the nose for cheese, but I'm the one who likes to taste it. I can't eat bread. I'm a celiac, and I have to be careful around stuff that has wheat in it, but Aunt Charlotte is really careful about what I eat. She makes sure there's a special dish for me with rice crackers or gluten-free bread she makes herself. She's so sweet. I don't know what my dad, Amy, and I would have done without her. We moved in last year when our mum...I don't want to talk about her right now. Maybe another time, okay?

Anyway, I'm excited about the party. So why are my fingers shaking and why am I breathing high in my chest? Should I be scared going to the old winery? Do you think the rumors are true? Do you think I should warn Meredith and Aunt Charlotte? There was a murder in Providence last year. I don't want something like that to happen again. I really really don't.  Thanks for any advice you might give.

  1. Hi Clair! You remind me of me - but many years younger. I like the same things you like and I also love to read mysteries. Maybe you will be able to solve your own mystery one of these days. Leave the dangerous stuff to grownups, though. Promise? P.S. I am in the middle of reading a book called The Long Quiche Goodbye by Avery Ames and what a coincidence, there are twin girls with the same names as you and your sister and they have an Aunt Charlotte and she makes dishes with cheese...
Well, it's just after 5 in the morning. I'm getting sleepy again, so I think I'll get back into bed and read a few pages of my book. I'm really enjoying it.

  2. Clair, I was like you at nine... hey, maybe you'll grow up to write mysteries, not just read them! That would be cool. Enjoy yourself if you go to the party, but it may be that it's kind of a grown-up thing. I always found grown-up parties boring. Sometimes I still do! Pet Rags for me.

  3. I think you should put all thoughts of murder out of your mind and just enjoy the party...although it is sort of fun to let the imagination run amok...for a short time.
I've loved reading about you & your sister!

  4. Clair, Pj sends you a message -- take a deep breath.

Nancy, I think you'll enjoy Lost and Fondue, too, and it won't be long before Clobbered by Camembert is out.

  5. Hi, Nancy and Victoria. I think it's funny you should write me about becoming a detective someday. I think about that. I'm so proud of my Aunt Charlotte. She does, like, two jobs really, when you think about it. I don't know how she manages, but she's really cool that way. I also like animals alot so I'm thinking about working with them when I'm older. Aunt Charlotte says I don't have to choose yet.

Erika, I think you're right. My imagination does run amok. :)

Janet, thank you for the message from PJ. I appreciate it. Breathing is such a nice past time. LOL And thanks for mentioning our next adventure.

  6. Clair, I hope you get to go to the party and I wouldn't be too afraid. Have fun!

  7. Thanks, Dru. I have to remember that parties aren't everything. I can have fun doing kid things, too.

  8. Have fun at the party, Clair, and try not to worry to much.

  9. Mary Jane, thank you so much! Worry seems to be my middle name sometimes. I wonder why that is?
