And dog owners hate snow, right? I think that goes without saying. Winter is a vile time of year to be a dog owner. You have to wash your pup's feet the minute they come in the house, or you get salt and slush and dirt all over the place, or even worse, worry about them licking that awful chemical snow-melt stuff off their paws.
My pooch, Hoppy, is Yorkie-Poo. For those of you who have never seen a Yorkie-Poo, I have to tell you, they are the most adorable dogs in the world, but they have two problems that make walking them in the snow a challenge: they are extremely close to the ground, and they don't realize it! Thus you get 'snowballs', the little globs of snow that build up on their fluffiest fur. By the time the dog drags into the house, you have not only their paws to clean off, but little balls of snow to melt, and the poor little dears are shivering!
Of course the way around some of this is the doggie sweater. I know, I know, some people think clothing a dog is ridiculous. I'm kind of in that camp myself. I never (okay, rarely) dress Hoppy in a costume, but a sweater for winter is a whole different affair. It's a necessity, and if he has to wear it, he may as well be fashionable, right? So he has a wardrobe of little alpine patterned sweaters, and rain gear, and... well, okay, he has booties. Enough for all his feet, and one extra, since my little guy is three-legged!
My point (and as Ellen Degeneres says, I do have one) is next time you see someone walking a three-legged dog that is wearing an alpine sweater, booties and a rhinestone collar, please refrain from wild laughter and pointing. I don't mind a giggle here and there, but the yelps of hilarity are really too much. I'm doing it for Hoppy's sake. Really. It helps that he is as cute as a button in the outfit, but it's for his health.
Now cats in winter... that's a whole different story. I tried putting a sweater on Denver the grumpy tabby once; the lacerations healed fairly quickly, but I'm not up to trying that again.
So... for all you pet owners out there... what lengths do you go to to keep your pet warm in winter, or do you just avoid the whole thing by not walking him/her? What is your stand on doggie fashion... utilitarian, or cutesie-wootsie?
