I Say Go For It!

China York, from KILLER SWEET TOOTH by Gayle Trent

The 2012 Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show is being held on September 29 and 30 at the Tulsa State Fair. The theme is "Headgear, Hats, and Headbands," and even Sixty Minutes Australia is going to be there this year!

Daphne went once before, but she saw all the cakes there and got intimidated. She has a little bit of a self-confidence problem, you know. Anyway, she gave her cake to the hotel staff, and withdrew from the competition.

Granted, there are some beautiful cakes at the show (I've included a couple pictures from the show's website below), but Daphne does good work. Would she have won? Maybe not, but the experience would have been good for her.

Rebecca Sutterby, KS - 4th Honorable MentionIsn't this cake GORGEOUS? You might think it was the winner, but it wasn't. This cake, make by Rebecca Sutterby of Kansas, was 4th, Honorable Mention.

Cheri Elder, MOThe one to the right here was made by Cheri Elder of Missouri, and it didn't even place. But who can deny how intricate and beautiful this cake is?

That's what I keep trying to tell Daphne. Yes, you know the competition is tough. But, in order to grow, you have to put yourself out there...take a risk or two....

What do you think? Better yet, how do you get your friend to believe in herself and take a chance?

  1. It's hard not to fear being judged and care what the judges think, but if she loves her work and tries to do her best each time, she's not losing. That's what my students and I tell each other when we enter machine embroidery contests.

  2. I 'love' those cake shows... extreme baking, I think of it. The cakes are so incredible. All you can do is keep the positive reinforcement going, then let her make up her own mind, I guess!

  3. How is it possible that Cheri's cake didn't place? Don't fret, Cheri, these kinds of things happen to me all the time. People are jealous of us and our talent!
