A Special Place for a Cat

From the Agatha Award-winning A CHEESE SHOP MYSTERY series

This post by Rags, Charlotte's Ragdoll Cat
For Author Avery Aames

I love the kitchen. I can always smell the seasons here. This season in particular. Thanksgiving is coming. I  love the savory scents. Nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. Charlotte—I'd call her Mistress, but she's not like that at all. She's normal. Real. She takes no airs around me. She makes me feel special. We take walks. She talks to me like I'm human.  She's good and I like her.  Anyway, she makes these cream cheese cookies at the holidays. If crumbs fall, I snatch them up. I'm pretty quick on my feet.

When Charlotte's not working at The Cheese Shop, she loves to cook at home. The twins, Amy and Clair, help her sometimes. I like that. I like watching them scurry around the kitchen. The girls get in the way, but Charlotte doesn't seem to mind. She likes the company. And the laughter. She laughs a lot, too.

Usually when the girls are around, I get lots of extra treats. And petting. And chats. That little Clair. She snuggles down to my level and talks real quiet to me. She says she needs to share a secret. She tickles my ears the whole time she talks. I don't turn up my nose. No, sir. I like being pampered. And now that we have a dog and I have to share my humans...

Did you know we have a dog? He's big. A Briard.  That's the kind with long shaggy hair. French, except he doesn't speak French. He speaks dog. I wasn't so sure about him at first, but he's pretty cool. Big and boyish. But I'm a boy, so I'm okay with that. He pounces a lot. After flies and bugs and stuff. And he snuffles. That nose of his. But he's been nice to me, so I'm nice back. I know, I don't have to be—cats rule—but I think some of Charlotte's ways are rubbing off on me. When she took me off the streets, I don't know...I changed.

Ahh. Shh. She's taking a tray of cream cheese cookies out of the oven. If I'm good...real good...

Say cheese!

  1. Willow made us comfy beds and embroidered our names on them. We get to spend most of our days in her machine embroidery shop, In Stitches. Customers love us!

  2. Hi, Sally-Forth and Tally-Ho! How special that Willow made you beds. With embroidered names? Hm...I must get Charlotte to do that. I have a bed. It's very comfy. By the way, I'll bet the sound of the embroidery machines is sort of like our inner hum. I must come visit. I'll get Charlotte on that, too. Until then...
