An English/Amish Thanksgiving

By Becky Troyer from Amanda Flower's A Plain Scandal

This will be my first Thanksgiving as an Englischer, and the best part about it is Food Network. Have you heard of this channel of television? When I came to live with Chloe in July, I discovered it. Twenty-four hours a day of cooking shows, and don’t even get me started on Paula Dean. I wonder if she has Amish relatives. So many of her recipes remind me of my mamm’s, especially her baking.

Chloe and I will be going to my parents’ farm for Thanksgiving. Like always my mamm will cook the meal. She takes great pride in feeding the entire family. I always enjoyed helping Mamm in the kitchen. It’s one of the things I miss most about living at home. Mamm’s kitchen is the center of the home and always smells like biscuits even if she hasn’t baked any for days.

This year, I hope Mamm won’t mind if I bring a few Englisch treats to the celebration. I have a few recipe ideas in mind. Red velvet cake, manicotti, monkey bread. Yum! And have you heard of something called hummus? It’s delicious. Chloe said she’s never seen anyone so excited about chickpeas before.

I’m off to watch Food Network. They are having a special on how to fry a turkey and then Iron Chef America! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  1. Yummmm! That should be a tasty Thanksgiving!

  2. I love Food Network and Paula Deen, too. Think your mother would flip out at the thought of frying a turkey or making a Turducken?

  3. OMG, I love the Food Network! Paula Deen is great, but I also like Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri and lots of others!
