By Claire
Hastings, from Sheila Connolly's romantic suspense, Once She Knew
I like the
Christmas season. I teach at Sophia
College in western Massachusetts, and December always brings the mass exodus of
students, which is great. Not that I
don't love them all—they're smart and they ask a lot of challenging questions,
and they usually even do the work I ask for, more or less on time. But that means it takes a lot of energy on my
part to keep ahead of them, so when they leave for winter break, I can relax,
just for a while.
Winter in
this part of the world is post-card pretty—lots of snow. The campus is lovely, with old buildings and
softly rolling hills, and a river running through it, that sometimes freezes
hard enough for skating. Snow is a pain
to drive in, but I can walk into town for just about anything I need: interesting shops, great restaurants of all
kinds, and terrific bookstores. If I had
to choose only one of the three, it would be bookstores!
I'm not
going anywhere this year. Normally I
would go see my folks, but they're not exactly happy with me about what
happened earlier this year when—sorry, I can't tell you, for reasons of
national security. Or that's what the
FBI said, and I really want to stay under their radar for a while. But my folks
are mad because I didn't tell them what was happening while I was in the middle
of it, but waited until it was all over. They haven't forgiven me yet.
Jonathan Daulton
said he might drop by. I'm not holding
my breath. Ever since that thing I can't
talk about, he's been very busy. I don't
even know whether he's in this country at the moment. Overall I'm not sure how I feel about seeing
him again. I mean, things were kind of
hot and heavy when That Thing was happening, but now that I'm back where I
belong, I've regained my perspective. Still, I wouldn't mind getting together,
if he happens to be around. And he did send me that package and told me not to
open it until Christmas…
So it will
be a peaceful holiday for me. There's a
faculty party or two, and I can catch up on my reading, and I've got a great
idea for a new research paper, about the impact of younger women recently
elected to governments in struggling countries.
If they're anything like my students here, I wouldn't be at all
surprised if they changed the world.
Happy
Holidays to you all! May the coming year
bring everything you wish for.
Leave a
comment (by Friday—I hope you're not reading this on Christmas Day!) and I'll
choose one person at random to receive your choice of (a) a copy of Once She
Knew (ebook), or (b) a copy of my new Penguin e-special, An Open Book (to be released 12/31), or (c) if you don't have an
e-reader, an Advanced Reader Copy of the first book in my new County Cork
Mysteries, Buried in a Bog (to be
released 2/5—but the ARC is available now!).
Merry Christmas! Yes, I'm reading this post on Christmas Day. I just got home from work. It's snowing and truly beautiful outside-but the ride home was a bit slow. I adore your orchard series and can't wait for your County Cork one. I'm unfamiliar with your romantic suspense, so will have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you all! Yes, it is Christmas day already here in Holland, and I am awake, while my boyfriend is still sleeping. I'll surprise him with a nice brunch if he gets awake in time. So I took the time to read some of my favourite blogposts first.
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds good Sheila, goodluck and congrats!
This is new to be,too. I'm sure this and the Cork County Mysteries will be favorites also.
ReplyDeleteHi Sheila. I do not own an e-reader as I like holding a book in my hands, but I would love to read this book. Merry Christmas to all. It's early Christmas morning in New England with very light snow. Perfect.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas! What better way to spend those few early morning minutes than reading before all the craziness of Christmas begins. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and best wiahes for a safe and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday! In a comfy chair with a great book, have a healthy, happy safe Christmas! And Merry Christmas to you and all you love!

Merry Christmas! I, too, am reading and posting on Christmas Day. My daughter is going to work, for a couple hours (home health care) and I'm going to cook. Will do "face time" with our daughter who lives in WAshington State while she opens gifts. She's alone this Christmas. Her husband has been deployed to Kurdistan. We're in Nebraska. Wishing a wonderful and safe Christmas to every one!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas! There is never a time that I don't read at least for a little bit.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas. I'm another Christmas day reader
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays! Thanks for having this contest. Would like the arc of Buried in a Bog! Merry Christmas!!!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas! I always find time to read no matter what the time of day! Reading is my paasion and my great escape to take me away for awhile. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I meant passion (lol)!
DeleteI hope you have a very Merry Christmas! I'm currently enjoying the apple orchard mysteries and looking forward to your new series. There's nothing better here in western Massachusetts in winter than curling up with a good book while the snow piles up outside - not that we've had more than a dusting so far, just enough for a white Christmas. Happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas from MN - where it's COLD!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the Orchard Mysteries and look forward to this new series. Happy Christmas
ReplyDeleteAnother Merry Christmas for MN--and yes, it's really cold here.
ReplyDeleteWe already finished our Christmas stuff Sunday & yesterday. Now I am waiting for texts from my far flung daughter and gson. It's not quite like being there, but I do 't have to wait months for news like in wagon train days. How did they stand it???
ReplyDeleteAnyway, your book sounds like something I'd like!!! I'd love to win an arc.

My teenagers were ready at 5:30 this morning. I even had a little nap after the excitement of scratching lotter tickets. Pie is in the oven so I'm relaxing a bit now. Merry Christmas to all.

ReplyDeleteI read this earlier but have just gotten around to posting. As it's not my holiday I went witht the tradition of going to the movies and saw "The Hobbit" (again). This time I saw it in IMAX so I could see 9 minutes of the upcoming Star Trek movie.
ReplyDeleteI am reading this Christmas evening. Hope your Christmas was nice.

ReplyDeleteLOVE these giveaways!! It's a great thing cuddling up with a good book (ARC or Kindle copy) in this cold weather....well, as cold as it really gets in Florida :) Have a wonderful and blessed New Year!!
ReplyDeleteAnd a happy Third Day of Christmas to you all.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to include ebooks as give-aways. I'm so spoiled by my Kindle that I never never never try reading one of those paper monkeys with minds of their own and keep turning pages by themselves. But authors beware. Without all that paper stuff between you and me on a Kindle, I can read directly into your mind.
Happy Third Day of Christmas. Best present yet--a neighbor shoveled my sidewalks. Now I can leave for hot muggy Florida where it never rains, much less snows, knowing the dog-walkers and school children in my neighborhood won't crack their hip in front of My house while I'm gone.
ReplyDeleteHow cool to include ebooks as give-aways. I never Never NEVER read those silly paper monkeys with minds of their own, determined to turn pages however the wind blows. But writers beware--without all that paper stuff between you and me when I'm reading on a Kindle, I can see directly into your mind!
And I didn't read this on Christmas day. Son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters here for a few days, but they left yesterday - which is when we discovered our internet connection had also left. (Always happens over holidays, somehow.) Fortunately, it's now back with us, so I eagerly hopped on and read this. (And I read the raves previously.)
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays! I am really looking forward to Sheila's new series. I love how she ties historical elements into her cozies. It satisfies my genealogy & mystery reading passions all in one. Thanks for the giveaway!
