From Stirring the Plot the 3rd in the nationally bestselling
Cookbook Nook mysteries
by Daryl Wood Gerber
I've faced life's ups and downs. I've been a chef at a renowned restaurant. Battled an arsonist's fire. Reinvented myself as a sport store owner. I was married for a brief time. Big mistake. My fault. We were too young. I was rebellious. My father...another story. I can own up to my mistakes. I'm generally a happy guy. I look for the good in others, unless they're not looking for the good in me. I love dogs, exercise, and living by the ocean.
And now I love Jenna Hart. She doesn't know it yet. She got to me the minute I met her. Wham! She's bright, energetic, funny. Jenna runs a culinary bookshop and café in town. She's not a cook. Doesn't even try to fake it. She's a work in progress, she says. I'd like to teach her, but I don't want to crowd her. She lost her husband in a tragic accident, so I plan to take things slowly.
Here's the funny thing, ever since meeting Jenna, I have cookbooks on the brain. If I'm putting together camping gear for a customer, I drum up a camping cookbook to include. If I'm putting together fishing gear, presto, I've tracked down a cookbook for fish. Okay, sure, I've made excuses to go to the store just to see Jenna. I love looking at her, love the scent of her. She's got this laugh... Yeah. It's a good one. Unlike me, she's pretty tight with her family. Her father and I get along great. He's a real storyteller. And her aunt Vera is a hoot. I think she's pulling for me. Jenna also has a ginger kitten. Cute little thing. Frisky. He likes me, too. He probably won't take to my labrador retriever, but we'll address that as we move forward.
Oh, yeah, I intend to move forward. I can't ever remember feeling like this about anyone. I'm a grown man, and yet I feel like a teen.
