Just Whistle a Happy Tune

Have you ever had one of those weeks that just leaves you worn out, wrung out and gasping for breath? Maybe something really big happens that shakes your world to its core, or maybe it's a bunch of little things that come together to create a really rotten week. Or maybe it's just lots of blah that sticks together to form one great big puddle of nothing that could swallow you whole if you let it.

I just got over one of those weeks. I'm not going to lie, it was a tough one. So tough, in fact, it almost pulled me under. Luckily, this week started out much better. I took Miss Frankie out for brunch on Mother's Day which, I think, was good for both of us. I lost my mother when I was 12 and Miss Frankie lost her only child two years ago, but we have each other and that's a gift.

We shared some good food and good conversation and we kept each others' spirits up on a day when they easily could have fallen. I'm not saying we didn't each have a moment or two where we got misty-eyed or lump-throated, but neither of us wants to remain stuck in the bad times, so we do make an effort.

It can be easy to wallow when life gets tough--at least it can be for me. Sometimes, the tough stuff can feel overwhelming. I don't know about you, but there are days when I have to make a conscious choice to lift my chin and keep putting one foot in front of the other. But those really bad days are (luckily) few and far between. Usually all I need is a moment alone with a favorite comfort food, a few minutes to pamper myself with a bath and a good book, or maybe some music that makes me feel good.

Another of my favorite things is to find something to put a smile on my face. In my spare time, what little of it I have, I like to play around on Pinterest. I don't pin a lot of crafty ideas, but I do like to pin pictures of things that I find beautiful or soothing or inspirational. I also like to pin pictures I find amusing, with the occasional recipe thrown in to make me feel like I'm being productive while I'm there.

If you're on Pinterest, I'd love to connect with you. You can find me HERE. And if there's something special you do to lift your spirits when things get tough, I'd love to hear about it.
