Interview with character Violet Waverly and author Amanda Flower

Amanda: Hi, Violet, thank you for much for agreeing to do this interview.

Violet: You didn’t give me much of a choice.

Amanda: (smiles) That’s true, but it’s important for readers to get to know you before your first book, Crime and Poetry, comes out on April 5, 2016. Don’t you think so?

Violet: I guess.

Amanda: Great! So let’s get started. Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Violet: Well, I'm PhD candidate at the University of Chicago. I’m getting my doctor in Nineteenth Century American Literature. My focus is on the Transcendentalists like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, and I recently moved back to my home village of Cascade Springs, New York, which is just outside of Niagara Falls, to help my Grandma Daisy with her bookshop, Charming Books.

Amanda: Tell us about Cascade Springs. What makes it special?

Violet: It’s known for its healing natural springs. Some says that the water has mystical properties. But the village wasn’t special to me for a long time. I was set and determined never to return after I left at seventeen.

Amanda: Why did you leave? What happened?

Violet: I think readers should wait for that answer in the book. If I told you now it would take all day and many more words than this interview will allow.

Amanda: Interesting. Since you dislike the village so much, what made you come back?

Violet: It’s not that I dislike the village. It’s just that my past here is complicated… very complicated. I came back because my Grandma Daisy tricked me.

Amanda: How did she do that?

Violet: She pretended to be dying. Not a very nice trick to play on your only grandchild, but I have since gotten over it. You’d have to know my grandmother to understand.

Amanda: If you were tricked, why did you stay?

Violet: Someone killed Grandma Daisy’s boyfriend, and I had to figure out who before the cops threw her in jail. They would have done it too. They accused innocent people of murder before, and I’m speaking from experience here.

Amanda: Was that the only reason you stayed?

Violet: (hesitates) No, but if I told you the other reason, I don’t know if you would believe it.

Amanda: Try me.

Violet: Do you believe in the magic of books?

Amanda: Of course!

Violet: Well, in my life, it just got literal…
