Loving to read!

By Stephanie Lowe from the Ashton Corners Book Club Mysteries
      by Erika Chase

I have my dream job! Working in A Novel Plot bookstore, ever since Molly Mathews bought it, has turned out to be more than I’d ever hoped for. And I have Lizzie Turner and the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society to thank for it!

When I moved to Ashton Corners a few years ago, I was scared and pregnant. My family had turned me out and I hadn’t finished high school, so not much hope for a job, much less a future. But then I met Lizzie and her friends who took me into their book club and their hearts. I started taking night school classes through the Literacy program, and Lizzie turned out to be my teacher.

And here I am today. I passed, I gave birth, I have so many new friends, and a job. And it’s no mystery how that happened, although it did happen because of mysteries. I found a world of clever people with interesting jobs and hobbies who were also good at solving mysteries between the covers of all those books.

I latched onto cozies and maybe one day I’ll branch out a bit but for now, I love the world of cozy mysteries. The characters become my friends as I follow them through each new book. And it’s so wonderful to have a book club where I can talk about it all.

And my job, well imagine getting to see and handle all these new books as they come into the store. It’s like Christmas every day!  And Molly is actually paying me to read them so that I can tell our customers about all these new adventures. She calls it hand-selling. I call it paradise.

Is there a book that changed your life or the way you look at something?

  1. For me, REBECCA by Daphne du Maurier set the standard for suspense.

  2. I loved the book "Gone With the Wind". It made me want to know about the antebellum Era and the South.

  3. Nancy Drew books -- my Mom gave me her whole collection, and they were magical to me~
