First Tuesday Bliss

A Day in the Life Devereaux Sinclair by Denise Swanson

Hi! Dev here.

As the owner of Devereaux’s Dime Store and Gift Baskets, there’s a lot I enjoy about my job. I love stocking the shelves with merchandise from bygone days. I love creating just the right basket for a lucky recipient, be it an innocent birthday basket for a six year old or a seductive anniversary basket for a couple in love.

However, my very favorite task is selecting the books for the spinner racks that have a place front and center in my store. I reserve one rack for the backlists of my beloved mystery series and my friend Poppy’s romances, but the other is all new releases.

I was a little miffed when this month’s debuts didn’t arrive on time. They were supposed to be here a week ago and my regulars, the readers who come here the first Tuesday of every month to get their book fix were not happy. Neither was I. And since I know that authors depend on first week sales, a late arrival sucks for all of us.

Well, they’re here now and I’m going to take my time placing them in the perfectly eye-catching arrangement that will make sure they are snatched off of the shelves. I like to put the mysteries in sections: food, pets, crafts/hobbies, and paranormal.
Wow! Lots of great covers this month. Let see. I want to go for maximum contrast so no two of the same colors next to each other.

Oooh! I think I found the book for the top spot on the spinner rack. I always choose one with an amazing cover, great title, and with a back cover that intrigues me and this one has it all.
Heather Blake’s Gone With the Witch has a cool title. The cover with its sparkly pink borders, the beautiful garden, the cute black cat and little dog. Adorable. Now let’s see what it’s about. A pet show. Yep. We have a winner.

Okay. I’m just going to read a couple pages to makes sure.

An hour later

Yikes! Jake will be here to pick me up any minute. Thank goodness my date is with him instead of Noah. Noah hates it when I’m running late. Jake just relaxes and enjoys the moment.

You can read more about Dev in Between a Book and a Hard Place, the fifth book in the Devereaux’s Dime Store a humorous romantic mystery series.
