from Peg Cochran's Farmer's Daughter series
But
sometimes I do get tired!
“Can I give
you a hand with that?”
I looked
up, startled, at the sound of Jake’s voice.
Jake is my next door neighbor. He
rents his pasture from me and provides me with plenty of fresh milk.
Dear Reader, Jake looks more like a cowboy
than a farmer in his plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up and his worn jeans
and cowboy boots.
Jake made
short work of digging the hole I needed.
He was almost finished when the shovel struck something that definitely
wasn’t dirt. He got down on his hands
and knees and pushed the loose soil aside.
“It’s a
bone,” he said, getting to his feet. He
turned to me. “Do you think someone is
buried here? This land must have been inhabited by the Indians at one time.”
He picked
up the shovel again and carefully began to dig deeper but there were no more
bones to be discovered.
“Should we
call the police?” he said.
“I don’t
know. It’s only one bone. And we don’t even know if it’s human.”
“Better
safe than sorry,” he said as he pulled his cell phone from his pocket.
He hadn’t
even begun to punch in the number when Jenkins and Bitsy came bounding over to
see what all the fuss was about. Jenkins
is a short and stout Westhighland white terrier, and despite her name, Bitsy is
a considerably larger mastiff.
Dear Reader, I should have suspected this
right away!
I looked at
the two dogs and the proverbial light bulb went on. I began to laugh.
Jake pulled
the phone away from his ear. “What’s so
funny.”
I pointed
at the bone in his hand. By now I was
laughing so hard I could barely talk.
“The
bone…it’s a soup bone. Jenkins must have
buried it. He can dig a hole faster than
a Bobcat.”
Jake looked
sheepish as he put his phone back in his pocket.
“I guess I
jumped to the wrong conclusion—especially given how many murders you’ve been
involved in.”
“I’m just
glad this isn’t another one,” I said as I scratched the dogs behind the
ears. “I’ve had enough corpses for a
lifetime.”
GIVEAWAY!
To win a copy of No Farm, No Foul, first in my Farmer's Daughter series, leave me a comment below--have your pets gotten up to anything really funny?
I lost my furbaby a couple months ago. She was very loving and cuddly.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I'm going to get another dog or not - I think I'm too old
for potty training.
Would love to read the book. thanks
txmlhl(at)yahoo(dot)com.
I know what you mean. If we get another dog after our Westie Reg (who is 11 and still going strong), I think I would go with a rescue who is already trained and needs a home.
DeleteI'm almost finished with No Farm, No Foul. I still haven't a clue as to who killed Prudence. When will the sequel come out?

ReplyDeleteBev, I believe Sowed to Death, book #2, will be out in July 2017. Cover reveal soon!
DeleteOne year on April Fools day my mom was working at the local children's fair. I was going with her and when we got read to leave she couldn't find her car keys. My friend and myself looked all over the house for the car keys and they were no where to be found. As I walked over to the dryer where my mom's purse was and I kicked her shoe that was next to the dryer. As it turns out my mom's cat got up on the dryer and knocked over her purse causing her keys to fall into her shoe. It was a great April Fool's trick, played for by my mom's cat.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever cat!
DeleteI lost my Pekeingese years ago, and I just can't bring myself to get another dog.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that. I know how you feel--they are part of the family.
DeleteBogie is sensitive and understands everything. Smart as a whip. A lap dog rescue dog who knows trust and love but feels danger as well. A funny story about Bogie chasing the UPS truck down the road without a care in the world. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI can just see that!
DeleteWe are headed off with my 6 weeks old granddaughter to visit friends who have cats. I am looking forward to the cats' reactions.
ReplyDeleteI have no pets due to allergies but like reading about them. The book sounds really interesting. Thanks for having the giveaway. I love to win this

ReplyDeleteBelle our 11 year old female still acts like she is a kitten. She races around like a little nut and makes these strange noises. She climbs on the furniture and the cat condo until she wears herself out. She is like a blur.

I have 3 rescues. A dog and 2 barn cats. The dog is mostly Jack Russell and tears through the house for exercise. Alternatively sleeping 23 hours a day.
ReplyDeleteWe have a cat door in a window screen and the cats bring lots of presents. Bunnies, voles, mice, birds, and even a koi one time.
Funny you should ask this today...our cat, who is 2 years old, hasn't spent a lot of time outside but in the past few months we've been letting him into the backyard to explore and hunt bugs. It's hilarious. Well, Saturday he decided to get under the deck and not be able to find a way out. We spent over an hour trying to coax him with a flashlight, treats, laser pointer, the works...to no avail. My husband ended up having to unscrew a plank from the deck so we could retrieve him. Sunday he was grounded and didn't get any outside time. haha! Little booger.

They do keep you guessing, don't they?
DeleteLoved reading this! Thank you for sharing. It's been 2 years since we got our rescue dog, Sadie. She's such a great dog but really goofy. Sometimes I feel she's goofy cause she's finally learning how to live! I can't wait to read your new book.

My dogs get into all sorts of trouble! One time I came home and realized I left the bathroom door open. Big mistake! They had ripped up all of the toilet paper and went the the garbage. Luckily there wasn't anything dangerous to them in the trash. I probably wouldn't have realized they even touched the trash can, but one of my dogs was walking around with her head stuck in the top! I took it off of her, but I really wish I would have taken a picture! Thanks for the chance to win! This series sounds great!

That is too funny! Our Bearded Collie once got his head stuck in the top to the garbage can--we thought it was funny--he didn't!
DeleteOur dog was never a digger, but she would hid any ill-gotten gains in the puffy sides of her dog bed. I miss her like crazy, we just lost her at the end of the summer.

I had a beautiful black lab and she was a special needs puppy because she had a back leg that was shorter than the other one. She never let that bother her and she would climb over anything that got in her way. She had a lot of spirit and never knew there was anything wrong with her. She was a really great companion and I'm glad I got to be a part of her life.

ReplyDeleteI'm dying to get my hands on this book! I grew up in farm country for goodness sake! Thank you for the contest. My dachshund would go into the sleeve of my puffy coat and stick her head out the hand hole. She would get stuck and have to wiggle around to get back out and it just looked so cute and funny! I miss her very much.

I'm without pets right now, but my neighbors dogs continues to amuse. He runs over to the fence in the morning to watch me hang out my wet laundry. I say Good morning Ralph & off he trots. One morning I got distracted and did not say Good Morning. He stood there until I turned my attention to him and said my piece. Happy with that he trotted off.

I think about the funniest thing any of our pets do is when our little dog comes in in the morning and his feet are wet from the dew he jumps around in circles and scratches his feet on the floor until they are dry. bookaunt at outlook dot com
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity. Our cats are indoor/outdoor cats. They love to sit outside on one of the roofs posed like gargoyles staring at the yard. They each have a favorite spot. cheers at Marjimmanor.com
ReplyDeleteI had to have my cat put down about a month ago. Couldn't stand the crying of my other cat. So got a kitten a week ago. It only took a week and Rhubarb and Truffles are playing together like they have always known each other. Looking forward to your new book. Pugpower63@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteMy daughter's English Bulldog, Poppy, loves to steal blankets and roll in them until she's completely covered up. Guess she's cold!
ReplyDeleteMy adorable smokey gray cat, Smokey (lol)who is no longer with us used to jump up on the ledge at the front door and ring the bell to come in. He had an audience who watched him do this because it was so unbelievable. Too bad it was at a time when there were no cell phones, so no instant pictures!

It's sad when a pet crosses over the Rainbow Bridge. When our grey tabby cat passed on there was such a hole in our life and our other cat's life that we adopted an orange tabby long haired kitten. This seemed like a good idea at the time but 6 years later the two still don't get along. The orange boy stays on the second floor most of the day while the black boy roams wherever he pleases. No matter how much we try to get them to except each other the older cat just rejects the idea. What an animal house. robeader3@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI was standing in the driveway, looking at the sky, thinking we might have rain soon. I was chating with our two cats when all of a sudden their heads perked up and they took off fast. Seems they heard the heavy rain coming. Which I was glad that I had come on inside before. It was funny to see.

love your books!! I have a pom who stole a hotdog from one of the kids and buried it in one of my big potted plants. After everyone was gone, she dug the hotdog out and carried it to the kitchen sink....standing there until I rinsed it off for her so she could eat it.
