We all love summer, no doubt about it
but now it’s fall and things are changing big. Fact is, they’re getting
downright weird and with me living in Savannah all my life I hardly notice. It’s
sort of like when you were a kid you didn’t know how quirky your family was
until you started going to sleepovers at friends’ houses and saw how “normal”
they are.
That’s what’s happening in
Savannah right now. After the Chick-fil-A Football Kickoffs things happen here
on Saturdays that just don’t take place at other times of the year, or in other
parts of the country. Oh there are still golf crazies out there hitting those
little white balls all over the place but even they take time off for king
football and here’s how you know…
1. It’s a cliché, but it’s
true: The malls and shopping centers are vacant. And there’s no traffic on
Abercorn for a change.
2. The few folks who are
out shopping (who aren’t Yankees) are wearing team colors and logos. And
they’re driving cars with flags and magnets.
3. The chip aisle of Krogers
and Winn Dixie are reminiscent of the bread aisle during a January snow threat.
4. Churches and country
clubs are shuttered and quiet: no Saturday weddings this time of year. If an
enthusiastic bride dares to break this code of conduct, she risks
reducing not only her guest list by at least half—but the bridal party as
well.
5. 10 a.m. liquor store
lines are as long as the ones at Wal-Mart on Black Friday.

7. It’s not unusual to smell
barbecue at 7 a.m.
8. You can watch college
football while getting a mani-pedi. At a salon. In a fancy neighborhood.
9. It’s easy to get a
reservation at the most popular restaurants—and even the
finest ones have a TV in the bar.

So that’s the fall news from here in Savannah where all the men drink
bourbon, the women have big hair and the kids say yes ma’am and yes sir if
they know what’s good for ‘em.
So what’s going on in your neck of the woods? I’ll giveaway on of my new Lethal In Old Lace totes from the answers.

DeleteHey Aunt Kiki,
ReplyDeleteWhat, no dance lessons going on? Just teasing!
I'm in Tampa, FL, and a block from Chamberlain High School. So I know which high school game is going on. I can hear the band practicing from inside my house! I live 5 miles from Buccaneer Stadium so I know who I have to root for. And the debate around here is Gators or Seminoles! Very rabid fans!
Me, I am going to food festivals and gem shows!
Sounds fantastic!!! Wish I were going with you.
DeleteIt's almost 80 here. But but dinner time it will be in the 60's. I have stew cooking in the slow cooker. Egg noodles are being made to go with it. Trying to decide what to read. I have a sick kid sleeping on the couch with 2 of the dogs. There will be a little quiet time.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is hot then chilly here, Auntie Kiki. Leaves are turning. As for the chip aisle, I hope enough hot dog are left in the case for Reagan to supply BW!
ReplyDeleteReagan always has a supply of hot dogs for BW. She thinks she may have to turn to veggie dogs to keep his cute figure for that poodle down the road. LOL

ReplyDeleteI live in North Alabama, born and raised, and football is pretty much a religion here as well. I have 10 yr old twin and one play youth league football well as my nephew do we have had football games every Saturday since the first of September. I've had more than enough football lately but the boys have fun playing. This as our first Saturday with cooler football weather. We had been in the 90s with rain half the time on game days. Even youth league games in Alabama have tons of fans. We had a community pep rally and homecoming parade Thursday and there were thousands of people who ended up at the football stadium and we live in a rural county. It looked like half our county showed up. Yes, football is loved in the South
ReplyDeleteAnd football is a great way to stay in touch with friends. Love tailgating and football parties. Have fun.

DeleteWe have actually had a few nice days in a row here. It seems the Fall and Spring here just bounces from cold to hot until it decides which season it is. The Fall I laugh, it gets cool, the trees start to change, it gets hot, the trees stop, cool again and change again, hot again, cool and the trees throw down all their leaves in disgust because they are tired of guessing, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI love the weather in spring and fall too!!! Wish we could omit the winter part. LOL
DeleteWatching football, my New England Patriots
ReplyDeleteAlways a good game!

ReplyDeleteWhat fun for you!!!!!!! The boys of summer in the playoffs!
