Soup's On!

by J.J. Tanner from the Dinner Club Mysteries
                                      by Linda Wiken

'Tis that season before the turkey, ham and Christmas cake seasons. Soup season and it's one of my favorites. I think it's because I can often assume the mantel of someone who is creative in the kitchen when I try my hand at soup. And that's important to me. I'm trying to overcome my reputation for being a cookbook junkie who doesn't know her way around a spice rack.

I know, it is my own fault. For years I've collected cookbooks -- the ones with the colorful pictures -- the way some people collect Santa Clauses. And believe me, I know several of those.

However, I'm feeling privileged and loved being a part of the Culinary Capers Dinner Club. They've taken me in with all my foibles. So, I try with every dinner I host, to turn out a splendid meal.

Soup is really my comfort zone though. And often, I don't even use one of my beloved cookbooks.

I'm having the devine Ty Devine, PI extraordinaire over for dinner this weekend. And soup is definitely the starter to what I'm hoping will be an evening to remember. I think I'll do my roasted pear and sweet potato soup. It's tasty, and with the right mixture of spices, playful.

Are you with me on this one? Is soup a favorite in your house and if so, what is your favorite recipe?

The first book in the Dinner Club Mystery series is now available at the bookstore of your choice, and on-line; also as an e-book.

  1. We enjoy soup in the cold weather. Split pea is one of our favorites.

  2. Soups and stews are perfect this time of year. I am always trying to find a good, creamy, chicken wild rice soup recipe. Yum.

  3. We are big soup eaters. My wife does the split pea soup and the potato leek soups. I do my chicken soup (15qt batches) and my turkey, bean, barley and veggie soup (also 15qt batches). We have a very large freezer. Soup is our go to for dinner when we're not really hungry.

    1. It is great to have them stockpiled in the freezer, for sure. Sounds like you have some very tasty meals!

  4. I just love soup & think it should be eaten every day.

  5. I'm with you there, Jana. Thanks for commenting.
