I'm arranging tickets to go to the opera with my assistant, Amanda Blake. She's new to opera, so I'm starting out with our local company, The St. Petersburg Opera. The performance is: Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffman). It plays at The Palladium, 253 5th Avenue N., St. Petersburg on Friday, June 2, 7:30 pm, Sunday, June 4, 2 pm, and Tuesday, June 6, 7:30 pm. Check out their website at www.mypalladium.org.
Hoffmann, the poet-hero of The Tales of Hoffmann, has four love affairs that haunt him in Offenbach's grand and final opera. The opera fantastique begins with Hoffmann waiting in a tavern for his current passion, an opera diva appropriately nammed Stella. To pass time time Hoffmann tells the other students stories about three of his previous loves, each of which ends in disaster. For example, Olympia turns out to be a mechanical doll! Each of his loves get wonderful music to sing before breaking Hoffmann's heart. It will be sung in French with English surtitles!
I can't wait to introduce Amanda to the joys of live opera from our local company.
