Paperback Writer (Okay Reader)
A Day in the Life Devereaux Sinclair by Denise Swanson
Hi! Dev here.
As the owner of Devereaux’s Dime Store and Gift Baskets, there’s a lot I enjoy about my job. I love selling vintage merchandise that no dollar store would ever stock. I love creating gift baskets—both the innocent birthday and the erotic romance ones.
But, my hands on favorite is opening the box of books and loading up the spinner racks. These racks are front and center in my store. One has the backlists of my beloved mystery series and my friend Poppy’s romances and the other is all new releases.
Sadly it seems lately that the mystery selection is shrinking. The monthly debuts used to overflow; now there are fewer and fewer, especially of the mass market paperbacks. My racks can’t hold hardcover or trade size, so that’s a problem.
My regulars, the readers who come here the first Tuesday of every month to get their book fix, have certainly noticed and been asking about their favorite series. I wish I knew what to tell them.
Well, I’m going to take my time placing the ones that I do have in the perfect eye-catching arrangement that will make sure they are snatched off of the shelves. I like to put the mysteries in sections: food, pets, crafts/hobbies, and paranormal and there are some great covers this month. Let see. I want to go for maximum contrast so no two of the same colors next to each other.
Oooh! I think I found the book for the top spot on the spinner rack. I always choose one with an amazing cover, great title, and with a back cover that intrigues me and this one has it all. It’s actually set in a dime store and being a Wizard of Oz fan, I love the title, Lions and Tigers and Murder, Oh, My. Plus, the cover is full of the cutest (and most sinister looking) stuffed animals!
Okay. I’m just going to read a couple pages to makes sure my customers will like it.
An hour later
Yikes! Jake will be here to pick me up any minute. Thank goodness my date is with him instead of Noah. Noah hates it when I’m running late. Jake just relaxes and enjoys the moment.
